What to Know When Welding Primer-Coated Steel

Solving one problem can create another. Safety always comes first. Amid competitive bidding, contract deadlines and the general drive to gain the best productivity and quality, welding operations in the shipbuilding industry face their own set of challenges. That’s especially true when it comes to welding primer-coated steel, a material prevalent for its ability to withstand atmospheric corrosion from sources such as saltwater. Most primer coatings are zinc-based and used on steel that is between 70 to 120 ksi in strength (and sometimes higher).

MHI Unveil 'Super Giraffe Robot'

The newly developed remote control Giraffe Robot can reach up to 8 meters to control valves in hostile environments. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has developed a remote-controlled robot, dubbed the 'MHI-Super Giraffe (MARS-C), which is capable of working at heights up to 8 meters (m) and moving freely in areas inaccessible by humans in, for example, highly radioactive environments. By changing the robot arm and/or tool attached at the arm end, the MARS-C can perform various tasks including valve opening/closing and radioactive decontamination work.

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. install & commission two Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (RMG) for Freightliner, Southampton Maritime Rail Terminal. Both Liebherr cranes were launched by Freightliner Ltd at a ceremony in Freightliner’s Southampton Marine Terminal. The cranes have been named Freightliner Fortis 15-10-2012 and Freightliner Agilitas 15-10-2012. The names represent strength, power, easy of movement and efficiency that the new cranes bring to Freightliner Ltd.’s operations at Southampton.

Ireland-based Liebherr to supply a ship-to-shore container crane to handle 'Post-Panamax' ships at DP World Melbourne. The crane has a waterside outreach of 50m a span of 25.3m and a landside backreach of 20m. The S.W.L. of the crane is 65 tonnes under twin lift spreader with a lift height of 38m under spreader. Irish Company to Supply U.S. Container Terminal Cranes

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. has recently secured an order for a pair of high-tech Megamax cranes. The cranes have been ordered by Maher Terminals LLC for their strategically located Port of New York / New Jersey container terminal. The cranes on order for Maher Container Terminal have a waterside outreach of 61m a span of 30.48m and a landside backreach of 22.9 m. The S.W.L. of the crane is 66 tonnes under twin lift spreader with a lift height of 42.67m under spreader. Hoist speeds are 70-175m/min, trolley speed is 245m/min and crane travel speed is 45 m/min.

Weather Charts for Raytheon Anschütz ECDIS

The German-based navigation specialist Raytheon Anschütz is now offering an integrated weather chart overlay for the Synapsis ECDIS. Taking the special needs of navigation into consideration, the layer was developed in close cooperation with meteorological experts of the German sea weather provider WetterWelt. With the new feature Raytheon Anschütz combines sea chart and weather chart in one display. All weather parameter, which are important for navigation, are presented as values or symbols on a separate layer and can be switched on and off any time.

More Liebherr RTGs for Cerescorp

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. signed a contract for the supply of four heavy-duty twinlift Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes to Cerescorp’s Halifax Terminal in Canada. Two similar LIEBHERR units were delivered to the terminal in 2002. The RTG’s are of 8 wheel configuration, stack one over five containers high and span six containers plus a truck lane. S.W.L is 50 Tonnes under twinlift telescopic spreader. Hoist speed is 23/50m/min and trolley speed is 70m/min. Crane travel speed is 70/130m/min. Crane drives are Liebherr AC, which has been specifically developed for gantry cranes and RTG’s using the Liebherr modular concept. The Liebherr Visuscan crane management system is also included.

NSRP Approves 11 Ship Production Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected 11 new Ship Production Panel projects, totaling approximately $756,000, designed to reduce the costs of Navy shipbuilding and ship repair. These relatively short, low cost projects were selected to complement portfolios of larger R&D projects funded through NSRP in responding to industry-consensus priorities and the Navy customer’s research areas of greatest interest. (Business Process Technologies Panel): U.S. commercial shipbuilding is important to maintain and modernize the industrial base for both new construction and repair of military ships and craft. The United States builds less than one percent of ships worldwide.
