Unithai Shipyard was recently awarded its 2,000th contract for repairing a vessel in dry dock. The largest shipyard in Thailand, Unithai performs an average of 100 vessel repairs per year, recording its 1,000th repair order in 2006. And if repair operations afloat are also tallied, it doubles the number of orders on track, the yard said. New Operations General Manager, Jos Goris, to bring 20 years of experience with top firms including Damen, Maersk and Shell. ASRY, a ship and rig repair yard in the Arabian Gulf, has appointed Jos Goris as the new General Manager of the Operations division, effective October 1. Goris brings more than 20 years worth of shipping experience with global leaders such as Damen, Maersk and Shell, with more than 12 years of that being in ship repair yards across Asia and the Americas.

Thailand’s Unithai Shipyard and Engineering said it has expanded operations to support the steady growth of offshore operations. The company has opened a new branch in Songkhla province, one of the busiest offshore markets in the region. The new branch will be fully equipped to fulfil clients’ needs for their offshore operations, such as in ship repair, warehousing, berthing, workshops, equipment and tools. The new facilities comprise a 60-meter berthing quay with a five-meter draught for small repair and the loading and discharging of cargo, and an 800-square-meter covered warehouse.

Unithai Shipyard & Engineering (UTSE) first in Thailand to be recognised by classification society for quality of its diesel engine repair work. The shipyard has been certified by Class NK for achieving a high-quality standard in repairing and reconditioning marine diesel piston crowns and cylinder covers. The company has collaborated with Azuma Group in Singapore, renowned as a specialist in reconditioning and repairing engine components, to provide technical support for a full range of engine-refurbishment services, including onboard inspection, welding, heat treatment, machining and chroming. UTSE say that this unprecedented recognition is a tribute to its steadfast commitment to delivering the best-quality service to its customers.

The largest ship currently under repair at Thailand’s Unithai Shipyard is the 140,532 dwt bulk carrier Eurydice D, owned by Marmaras. Other ships in the yard include the 35,224 dwt bulk carrier Maris, owned by Trust Shipping Enterprise, Piraeus, the 22,857 dwt part containership Med Lerici, owned by B Navi, World CI’s 3,043 dwt lpg vessel Gas Eurasia, the 22,531 dwt general cargo vessel Everise Glory, owned by Everise Maritime, Kuala Lumpur, and Baba Kaiun’s 10,100 dwt bulk carrier Ayutthaya Ruby. Also due is the 25,486 dwt bulk carrier Maritime Trader, owned by IMC Shipping.

Thailand’s Unithai Shipyard & Engineering currently has four vessels undergoing repair - Technomar Shipping’s 33,185 dwt containership Kota Perwira, Ahrenkiel Shipmanagement’s 26,140 dwt bulk carrier Caria, the Almog, a general cargo vessel owned by Dynamic Shipping Services, and the Spar Cetus, a 45,146 dwt bulk carrier from Fleet Management. Unithai Shipyard has another four vessels scheduled to arrive throughout this month (May) - the Stolt Alliance, a 12,674 dwt chemical tanker from Stolt Nielsen, Osaka Asahi Kaiun’s 16,563 dwt containership Singapore Bridge, the Sutra Dua, an 8,073 dwt chemical tanker from Sutrajaya Shipping, and Bunga Orkid Empat, a 43,246 dwt bulk carrier from Malaysia’s MISC.
