Russia Launches Satellite to Monitor Climate in Arctic

Russia launched its space satellite Arktika-M on Sunday on a mission to monitor the climate and environment in the Arctic amid a push by the Kremlin to expand the country’s activities in the region.The Arctic has warmed more than twice as fast as the global average over the last three decades and Moscow is seeking to develop the energy-rich region, investing in the Northern Sea Route for shipping across its long northern flank as ice melts.The satellite successfully reached its intended orbit after being launched from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur cosmodrome by a Soyuz rocket…

Cosco Names New CEO for OOIL

Cosco-owned  Hong Kong containerline  Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL)  said its chief executive Huang Xiaowen has resigned and Wang Haimin will succeed him.Executive director Zhang Wei has also resigned. OOIL said Huang and Zhang resigned due to "work commitments."Wang Haimin, aged 47, comes from Cosco, which recently acquired the Hong Kong-based company.Wang was elevated to the top management as a vice-president of Cosco Shipping in February, and became the vice-chairman of Shanghai-and Hong Kong-listed Cosco Shipping Holdings, parent of OOIL.Wang graduated from Shanghai Maritime University, major in Transport Economics…

Tse Heads Risk Management, BMT Asia Pacific

BMT Asia Pacific, a subsidiary of BMT Group has appointed Joanne Tse as Head of Risk Management based in Hong Kong. The new appointment will help support the regional growth of risk consultancy services - principally in the transportation and construction sectors. Joanne will be actively involved in developing and managing risk projects for our growing client base. She brings more than 15 years of experience in the rail industry specialising in risk assessment and management, safety assurance, and corporate/enterprise risk management. Rejoining BMT after three years at Willis Insurance Brokers, Joanne’s previous tenure focussed on rail engineering projects involving operational and construction project risks.

Clarksons Appoint New Prospective Chairman

Leading shipping services group, Clarkson PLC, says that James Hughes-Hallett will join the Board as a Non-Executive Director with immediate effect and will take over as Chairman from 1 January 2015 when Bob Benton will retire from the Board. Clarksons explain that James Hughes-Hallett brings a wealth of experience in the world of shipping, transportation, offshore and global trade, having worked for the Swire group since 1976. He is currently chairman of John Swire & Sons Limited, a Non-Executive Director of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Swire Pacific Ltd and Swire Properties Ltd. He is a Director of Steamships Trading Co Ltd and is Chairman of United States Cold Storage Inc.

OOCL Yokohama Named at Geoje Shipyard

OOCL announced the christening of its second in line of the sixteen 4,578-TEU vessels, ordered with Samsung Heavy Industries since 2004. The newbuilding was named the m.v. OOCL Yokohama, by sponsor Dr. Jane C K Chan, the wife of Prof. Yue-Chim Richard Wong, Provost of the University of Hong Kong at the Geoje Shipyard of Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea. The m.v. OOCL Yokohama will be deployed under the AEA1 service, after its initial deployment in KTX1 service in the Intra-Asia region, providing a vital link between Asia and Australia. The OOCL Yokohama’s port rotation is : Kaohsiung / Hong Kong/ Shanghai / Chiwan / Hong Kong / Sydney / Melbourne / Brisbane and back to Kaohsiung in a 35-day round trip.
