US Coal Exports Bound for Japan's New Power Plants
U.S. miner Cloud Peak Energy said on Tuesday it will export coal from a Montana mine for 30 to 40 months to two new power plants in Japan with shipments that could start late next year. The coal from Montana's Spring Creek Mine will be carried by rail to Vancouver and then sent by ship for delivery to two 540-megawatt coal gasification plants in Fukushima Prefecture, Cloud Peak said. JERA Trading Pte Ltd, a trading company based in Singapore, will buy the coal from Cloud Peak. Sales of the coal are expected to reach 1 million metric tonnes in the final contract year, Cloud Peak said.

Lockheed Martin Partners With Japanese Industry
Lockheed Martin, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, SAMPA Kogyo K.K. and Mitsubishi Corporation have formed a joint venture company that will serve the emerging combat system engineering and lifetime support requirements of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF). The joint venture company, MLS Corporation, represents a full service partnership arrangement between industry and government, and leverages Japanese and U.S. industry expertise in life cycle support and integration services to benefit the JMSDF. U.S. Okays Lockheed Aegis Combat System Sale to Japan
The U.S. State Department has approved the likely sale to Japan of two Lockheed Martin Corp Aegis combat systems valued at $1.5 billion, a deal aimed at boosting Japan's defenses against a ballistic missile attack, the U.S. Defense Department said Friday. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees foreign arms sales, said the Aegis combat systems and associated equipment would be installed on two new Japanese guided missile destroyers, or DDGs, expanding Japan's ability to carry out joint military missions with the U.S. Navy.

Ingram Barge to Participate in EPA’s SmartWay
Ingram Barge Company announced its participation in the new Barge Freight component of the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a public-private partnership between the U.S. Government’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the country’s leading private industry freight carriers and freight users aimed at reducing carbon, oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter emissions. Eastern Shipbuilding inform that Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC (GLDD) has placed orders for construction of a 433’ Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge Barge and a 158’-4” 15,600 BHP, CPP Tug. Named the GLDD302 (ESG Hull 252), the ATB Tug detailed engineering is being performed by Ship’s Architect, Inc. and the GLDD151 (ESG Hull 253), the ATB Dredge Barge by Bay Engineering, Inc. Both are based upon an Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering, Inc. ATB design. This Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge, Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) Unit, will be delivered in 2016.
Cruise Lines Contribution to Economy Boosts
The North American cruise industry generated $20.4 billion in economic activity within the United States in 2002 – nearly a ten percent increase from 2001 – according to an annual study by Business Research and Economic Advisors (BREA). Commissioned by the International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL), the study details cruise lines’ economic contributions and examines the extensive links that cruise lines have with major U.S industries. U.S. Port Congestion Adds to Cotton Traders' Woes
U.S. merchants face delays of as much as a week to ship cotton from major West Coast ports, threatening exports to China, the world's largest textile market, ahead of a key Chinese deadline at month's end for imports to arrive. Congestion has plagued West Coast ports for months, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, which are the two busiest container ports in the United States and together make up the top hub for U.S. cotton exports. The delays result from shortages of key equipment and an increase in container sizes, and are happening as labor negotiations drag on at the ports.

US Eases Arms Embargo Against Vietnam for Maritime Security
The United States on Thursday partially lifted a long-time ban on lethal weapon sales to Vietnam to help it improve maritime security, a historic move that comes nearly 40 years after the end of the Vietnam War. "The State Department has taken steps to allow for the future transfer of maritime security-related defense articles to Vietnam," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a briefing. State Department officials told a separate briefing that sales of any specific weapons would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as requests came in from Vietnam. They said the focus would be on helping Vietnam patrol and defend itself in the South China Sea, amid growing naval challenges from China, but said weapons sales could potentially include airborne systems as well as ships.
GE Ships LM2500 Marine Gas Turbine for US Navy
GE's Marine Solutions division said it has shipped a LM2500 marine gas turbine propulsion module that will help power the U.S. Navy's 75th DDG Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125). NSRP Projects Show Impressive Results
NSRP ASE sponsors a variety of R&D projects that address lean initiatives — some focusing on new construction and others on repair. One notable lean repair project that has demonstrated rapid payback and implementation involves the surface preparation process. Traditionally, about 25 percent of ship repair work has focused on surface preparation processes, and roughly 67 percent of surface preparation work involves non-value-added activities, according to industrial engineering time studies from Atlantic Marine. Through an NSRP-sponsored Ultra-High Pressure Water Blasting (UHPWB) project, Atlantic Marine is achieving substantial process improvements and related savings in time and money.
