It was owned by Midland Enterprises and was part of a tug/barge unit with the hopper barge Martha B. “One of the really gratifying aspects of ship repair and conversion is the satisfaction we get by being able to give new service life to vessels. Pirates Release Tanker and Crew in Gulf of Guinea
Product tanker MT Barrett has been released and all crew are safe following a six-day piracy incident in the Gulf of Guinea, U.K. based Union Maritime has confirmed. Union Maritime said it lost communications with its 11,999-dwt product tanker while the vessel was at anchor off Benin, West Africa on the morning of January 10, after which the company immediately implemented its emergency response plan and alerted regional maritime authorities and other vessels. A resolution process began when the pirates holding the MT Barrett made contact with the Union Maritime late on January 12.

Tug Newbuild Delivered to De Boer
On January 9, Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld delivered an ASD Tug 2310 SD (shallow draught), named Papillon, to De Boer Remorquage SARL, a subsidiary company of Dutch Dredging (Baggerbedrijf De Boer) and Iskes Towage & Salvage. Damen has customized the ASD for a 12-year contract with Grand Port Maritime de Guyane in the ports of Cayenne and Kourou in French Guiana. The tug’s primary function will be the assistance of vessels entering and leaving the ports. She can also provide emergency assistance, such as fire-fighting, survey activities and small transports.
Asbestos: Maritime’s Ticking Time Bomb
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) should amend regulations banning the use of asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACM) in ships, says John Chillingworth, senior marine principal at Lucion Marine. Regulations under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) state that if asbestos is found onboard a ship built after July 2002 then the vessel’s flag registry, in conjunction with its classification society, issues a non-extendable exemption certificate, providing the owner with a three-year window in which to remove the asbestos.
Liberia Opens Maritime Training Institute
The Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI) was officially opened by Liberia President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf during an inauguration ceremony in Marshall City, Liberia, on January 5. The facility is named after John G Bestman, former Liberian finance minister and a member of the board of governors of the Central Bank of Liberia. Under the management of the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), LMTI has undergone a massive renovation and facility modernization program over the past two years, resulting in the creation of a new campus and state-of-the-art facilities.
Union Maritime Tanker MT Barrett Disappeared in Gulf of Guinea
London-based tanker owner company Union Maritime vessel stated that, MT Barrett, a product tanker which was at anchor off Benin, West Africa has not been heard from since late on Tuesday 9th January. "On Wednesday we alerted local maritime authorities and are exploring all possible options and efforts as we continuously monitor the situation. Whilst we are tirelessly working to locate the vessel, our primary concern is for the 22 crew on board and ensuring their safety," said a press release from the company.

The American Maritime Partnership (AMP) today announced the election of Matt Woodruff of Kirby Corporation as its new President. He succeeds Thomas A. Allegretti, President & CEO of The American Waterways Operators. “Leading the American Maritime Partnership – which speaks for the half a million American men and women whose employment depends on the domestic maritime industry – is a great honor. Our vibrant domestic maritime industry is an essential foundation for America’s economic, national, and homeland security,” Woodruff said.
Navios Maritime Containers Acquires Boxship
Navios Maritime Containers, a growth vehicle dedicated to the container sector, announced that it has acquired the Navios Felicitas, a 2010-built, 4,360 TEU containership for a purchase price of USD 11.45 million. The vessel was delivered to Navios Containers’ fleet in December 2017. Navios Containers financed the acquisition of the vessel with cash on its balance sheet and $6.0 million of bank debt under one of its existing credit facilities. Following this acquisition, Navios Containers controls 21 vessels, totaling 88,820 TEU.
Fire Rips through Maritime Museum in Indonesia
A huge fire destroyed most of a Dutch colonial heritage site dating back to the 17th century, including a maritime museum, in the north of the capital Jakarta on Tuesday. Television images showed flames ripping through the red-tiled roof of the whitewashed rectangular buildings. Vessels: Safe/Sea Gets Twin Diesel Jet RIB From Almar
Safe/Sea upgraded its fleet of rescue vessels with an Almar Boat-built 33 x 12-ft. rigid hull inflatable boat (RIB). This vessel will be the seventh that Almar has built for Safe/Sea, and will boast a 28-in. diameter inflation tube, as well as a custom built, fully enclosed pilot house to protect the captain. The electronics suite, supplied by Pawtuxet Marine Electronics of Cranston, RI, includes a 48 nautical mile Furuno radar, a Northstar 957 color DGPS chartplotter, twin VHF radios, a Motorola private band two-way radio, a Horizon Loudhailer, a Ritchie digital compass, and dual ACR remote controlled spotlights. Also included will be Algae-X fuel filters, and an X-Changer oil recovery system.
SealCoat Offers Unique Antifouling Option
In 1992, Kjell Alm developed a method of preventing hard bio fouling from accumulating on surfaces submerged in either the sea or fresh water. The method was designed to be non-toxic and long lasting, and also combines as a corrosion protection coating. The method uses micro fibers, which through electrostatic application are sprayed onto a surface that is coated with an adhesive. The surface that is then created feels and looks like velvet, and is a surface that the larvae of hard bio fouling are unable to grip onto. In 1993, Alm patented the method and continued to develop, research and test the product. Today the method has been further refined.
