Litton Marine Systems Introduces Vessel Traffic System

Litton Marine Systems has launched a new IMO-compliant vessel traffic system (VTS) for locks, bridges, ports and coastal waters. The company's new VTS-Master-W is a new system utilizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and proprietary software running under Windows-98/NT. It is based on Litton's unique VTS-Master technology, which permits real-time remote display of raw video data from shore-based surveillance radars superimposed on geographical maps of the area. The modular VTS-Master-W system is of a flexible design and can be expanded from a basic low-cost radar-based traffic observation system into a comprehensive vessel traffic management information system (VTMIS) with multiple radar transceivers and monitoring stations networked via fiber optic cables


Q-Mar Partners with Socomar

Q-Mar, specialist in the development of ECDIS for the naval and hydrographic sectors, has formed a partnership with Socomar International to integrate its industrial and commercial activities. The management of both firms is under the direction of president and CEO, J.L. Paul Dionne. Socomar International is a Canadian provider of turnkey management information and navigation systems for the marine geomatics and environment sectors. The company specializes in sensors and integrated systems, vessel traffic systems, geo-spatial data infrastructure (GSDI) systems. Q-Mar has also signed a dealer license agreement with Nautical Data International (NDI) to license and distribute electronic charts from the Canadian Hydrographic Service.

Lockheed Martin Contract Will Expand Vessel Traffic Safety

Istanbul and Canakkale Straits. The original contract, signed in October 1999, was worth more than $20 million. The contract extension allows Lockheed Martin to install three more remote radar sites on the Marmara Sea to supplement the two Vessel Traffic Centers (VTCs) and 16 remote sensor sites along the straits in Turkey. This contract extension represents the last phase of the contract. Installation of the additional radar sites is scheduled for the middle of next year. The Marmara Sea connects the Black Sea to the east with the Aegean Sea to the west, which is part of the Mediterranean Sea. Istanbul is located at the entrance of the Bosphorus.

Transas Secures Two VTS Contracts in Bulgaria

Transas Marine has signed contracts with the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co) for the implementation of two significant Vessel Traffic System projects in Bulgaria. The first project involves completion of the second phase of the Bulgarian River Information Services project (BulRISII). Under this contract Transas will supply and install a Vessel Traffic Management Information System compliant with all European standards and technical requirements for the River Information Services.

Norcontrol IT Wins Contract to Upgrade VTS for North Sea Draugen Platform

Norcontrol IT has won the contract to upgrade the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) for the Draugen Offshore Oil Platform in the North Sea. The contract also includes a five-year Long Term System Support Program (LT-SSP). The Draugen Platform is owned and operated by A/S Norske Shell and currently uses a Norcontrol IT VOC 90 system. This system will be replaced with the latest VTMIS 5060, which can be upgraded to communicate with other VTS systems in the North Sea. The VTMIS 5060 has the built in capability to meet future government requirements regarding communication between land and offshore platforms. Draugen Offshore Oil Platform has been in operation since 1993 and has an average production of 220,000 barrels of oil per day.

3D Vessel Tracking: A New Course in Port Traffic Control

Transas to Provide Systems for PMI

The Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) coast operation of the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAG’s), has selected Transas Marine USA to provide the Navigational Simulation systems for their new simulation and training facility to be located in the heart of the Port of Seattle. The 15,000 square foot facility will include a new full mission ship simulator to DNV Class A standards with dual instructor stations, as well as secondary bridges for operating interactive exercises. Boasting a combination of the latest visual technologies, model databases, and a uniquely flexible design, the bridge simulator will provide a highly realistic training environment both inside and outside the wheelhouse.

Ghana Orders Adveto CVTS Port Control Software

Extended Adveto Compact Vessel Traffic System (CVTS) for Ghana Port Authority to be provided through True Heading of Stockholm. The new CVTS licenses for the ports of Tema and Takoradi represents an extension of the first AIS-order in 2011. The CVTS software is a part of a complete AIS and surveillance system delivered by True Heading (publ). The complete delivery will be performed during January 2013. “We have chosen the Adveto CVTS software for the delivery to Ghana Port Authority”, says True Heading ́s Managing Director Anders Bergström. “The Adveto CVTS software has proven not only to be very reliable but also to provide an AIS presentation fulfilling the latest international standards”.

Public Hearing Held on AIS Requirements

The Coast Guard is seeking additional public input on expanding requirements for the Automated Identification System (AIS) at a public meeting. Currently, Coast Guard regulations require AIS be installed on commercial vessels that are on international voyages. Other commercial vessels are also required to have AIS when they are operating in U.S. waters that have Vessel Traffic Systems or Vessel Movement Reporting Systems. The deadline for installation of this equipment is either July 1, 2004, or Dec. 31, 2004, depending on the vessel. The Coast Guard asks the public to comment on the expansion of the AIS requirement to other vessels and waterways. The Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 specifies requirements for vessels to use AIS.

Hoegh Osaka Update: Weather Playing a Key Role

Car carrier vessel Hoegh Osaka, which has been refloated after running aground last week, remains held in position at anchor on the Alpha Anchorage. Salvors pumped water from the ship for up to 2 hours yesterday, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said. Salvors also checked the ballast system and intend to rig another pump in the lower hold to pump into the ship’s tanks as well as overboard. The weather, including high winds, continues to play a key role in the salvage operations’ timeline as salvors are forced to adjust plans around environmental conditions. Saturday’s weather conditions prevented any activity on the vessel other than to connect the third tug. The area’s weather forecast looks very poor this week, peaking at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.

Large ships navigating narrow waterways are always vulnerable to accidents – one only has to think of the Sea Empress tanker disaster at Milford Haven, or more recently the wrecking of the Costa Concordia. Managing their progress, usually in and out of ports and in other restricted channels, has understandably assumed a critical role in ensuring their safety.

Mr Bråthen, who holds an electronics degree with focus on radar and underwater acoustics, brings more than 25 years’ international sales experience to the company, having spent the first six years of his career with the Royal Norwegian Navy. After working at sea on a number of seismic research vessels, Mr Bråthen spent the next decade as Sales Manager for Schlumberger Oilfield Services, selling high-tech products to the seismic, offshore and defence industries.

Bruce Harland, Vice President-Commercial Services of Crowley Maritime Corporation, has testified on behalf of Crowley and the American Waterways Operators (AWO) before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee at a field hearing held in Kodiak, Alaska. The hearing, which was held at the request of Sen. Lisa Murkowski (AK-R) and led by Subcommittee chairwoman Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), focused on the need for a robust U.S. Coast Guard presence in Alaska as the nation pursues expanding navigation opportunities in the Arctic region.

Two Rescued from Overturned Yacht off Cairns

The crew of Australian Border Force Cutter (ABFC) Storm Bay have rescued two people from the water after their yacht capsized off Cairns. Shortly after leaving Cairns on patrol on Sunday 4 December 2016, ABFC Storm Bay received a request from Cairns Vessel Traffic System to respond to reports of a vessel in distress approximately 1.2 nautical miles off Machans Beach. ABFC Storm Bay, operating under Maritime Border Command (MBC), a multi-agency taskforce within the Australian Border Force (ABF)


Lockheed Martin Awarded Contract

Lockheed Martin will provide the Arab Republic of Egypt with a fully integrated maritime search and rescue (SAR) system for the Gulf of Suez (GOS) under a $50 million contract signed today in Cairo. The SAR system will complement the Gulf of Suez Vessel Traffic Information Management System (VTIMS) provided by Lockheed Martin under a 1998 contract and provide the Egyptian Ministry of Transport with all the necessary capabilities to manage and respond to any maritime distress in the Gulf of Suez. The SAR contract was signed in the presence of the Prime Minister of Egypt, His Excellency Dr. Atef Ebaid; the Minister of Transportation, His Excellency Dr. Ibrahim El-Demairi; U.S. Ambassador C.

Transas Marine and VEI Form Alliance

Transas Marine (USA), Inc. of Lynwood, WA, and Valhalla Enterprises, Inc. (VEI), of Fort Lauderdale, FL, have announced a manufacturers’ alliance aimed at benefiting marine electronic dealers and recreational boaters. The agreement brings together VEI, a world leading manufacturer of flat panel displays and marine computers with Transas Marine, a world leader in electronic navigation products, vessel traffic systems and training solutions, marine surveillance, and simulation systems. Under the new alliance, VEI will distribute select Transas Marine navigation products to Transas Marine’s existing dealer network for the recreational market in the United States, the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

New Report Features for Seall Passage Planner

Maritime software specialist Jargoon announced that its Seall Passage Planner will now include a color coded risk assessment report feature. The smart e-navigation software is designed to overlay multiple vital data such as AIO or Navarea warnings directly on top of ENCs in order to give a wide range of navigational information to the mariner prior to/during a voyage. In addition, Seall Passage Planner produces a unique color coded risk assessment  report. All risks in the report are identified and highlighted in the geographical order that they occur.

Transas to Present Pilot Solutions at UKMPA

Transas Marine announced it will present its solutions for pilots at the UK Marine Pilot Association (UKMPA) conference in London, November 4-5, 2015. The company will display the Transas Pilot PRO chart plotter and the recently launched T-Mapper desktop chart conversion and editing application. The latest release of the iPad version of Transas Pilot PRO features new functionalities such as AIS Target Table, allowing for quick real-time filtering and search between hundreds of AIS targets


Indian Ports Register Positive Growth of 3.64%

The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.64% and together handled 499.41 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to December, 2017 as against 481.87 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. For the period from April- December 2017, Eight Ports (Kolkata (incl.Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Kandla) have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Cochin Port (17.27%), followed by Paradip (14.59%), Kolkata [incl. Haldia] (12.45%), New Mangalore (6.60%) and JNPT (5.94%).

Port of Rotterdam: 2017 in Review

Over the past year, 29,646 seagoing vessels entered the port of Rotterdam, up more than 600 from 2016's 29,022. The number of incidents in the port fell from 159 to 129, and included one ‘serious accident’ involving an inland vessel that went adrift after hitting a groyne with its rudder.
