Smart Sensor Mapping Breaks New Ground

Flicq Inc. an innovator in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions has announced that it has cooperated with Damen Shipyards in remote monitoring. The project has involved mapping smart sensor data from many sources to have a uniform view of a vessel’s health. Additionally, Flicq sensors have been deployed on Damen connected vessels.In September 2018, Damen posed their sensor mapping challenge at the Vodafone Ziggo/TNW IoT Challenge. Flicq was the winner of the challenge and successfully delivered a sensor mapping solution for Damen.

GoFree Vessel Monitoring Adds Global Connectivity with Vodafone

Vodafone announced today that it is working with Navico, an international marine electronics company, to bring global connectivity to Navico’s GoFree product suite. Using the Vodafone Global Internet of Things (IoT) SIM, GoFree can provide boaters, fleet managers, and service technicians with the ability to monitor, log, transmit and report important vessel information in real-time. With the connectivity, GoFree Track, an affordable hardware system,can track critical vessel information like engine hours, battery status, oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel consumption, and more. By tracking these on-board assets, boaters can instantly access details of potential mechanical problems and share them with technicians to service the specific area in need.

Northern Powerhouse Partnership Meet at Liverpool

Peel Ports has hosted the inaugural meeting of the Northern Powerhouse partnership at the Port of Liverpool today (8 December). The initiative is creating a new network to help grow the Northern economy and aims to champion the area’s strengths and promote local developments. Topics at the first meeting included transport and connectivity, the government’s industrial strategy, quality of life improvements and how partners can work together to support the Northern Powerhouse programme. The event was attended by over 40 leading businesses, including Atkins, Barclays, Deloitte, Drax, Siemens and Vodafone, as well as universities, local enterprise partnerships and business organisations.

Thuraya Partners with T-Mobile to Launch Roaming Service in USA

Thuraya Telecommunications Company has launched its roaming service in the United States of America in partnership with the American mobile operator, T-Mobile. The service, which commenced on July 12, allows Thuraya subscribers to roam seamlessly with their Thuraya mobile numbers into the T-Mobile network that reaches 96 percent of Americans. Thuraya customers in the region can now make and receive calls, and also send and receive text messages (SMS). The Company’s GmPRS roaming service will be enabled afterwards on the T-Mobile network. Mr. Tarek Shqairat, Director of Inter-Carrier Relations, Thuraya Telecommunications Company, said: “With more than 350 roaming partners worldwide, Thuraya is the only satellite operator offering roaming services over GSM networks.

Mazarakis COO, Kanellopoulos CFO, Excel Maritime

Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd (NYSE: EXM), an owner and operator of dry bulk carriers and an international provider of worldwide seaborne transportation services for dry bulk cargoes, announced that Charalampos Mazarakis has been appointed as the Company's Chief Operating Officer. Mazarakis will assume his position in mid May 2010. The company also announced that Pavlos Kanellopoulos has been appointed as the company's Chief Financial Officer. Kanellopoulos will assume his position in early April 2010. Mazarakis has 20 years of experience in finance and operations positions, mostly at a senior level. Mazarakis started his career in 1991 at Procter & Gamble in Greece.

Globalstar To Receive Additional Financing

Satellite telecommunications firm Globalstar Telecommunications said on Monday that five of its founding partners will provide the company with further equity financing. Under the terms of their agreements, Loral Space & Communications Ltd., Vodafone Group Plc, Qualcomm Inc.; Elsacom, and a France Telecom/Alcatel partnership will purchase 5.2 million shares of common stock of Globalstar for $56 million. Loral will purchase $12 million of this total. A sixth partner, ChinaSat, has indicated an intent to purchase an additional $12 million of Globalstar shares upon receipt of government approval. The share purchases are based on a price of $10.71 per share. The transaction is expected to close by September 29.

Broadband Solution for Cruise Ships

Grandi Navi Veloci and WINS, a joint venture set up by Skylogic Italia (Eutelsat’s broadband affiliate) and Maltasat International launched a satellite-based communications network on the first two of eight luxury cruise ferries that sail in the Western Mediterranean. The new network enables Grandi Navi Veloci to extend GSM telephony to passengers and crew at sea and also to provide broadband access services. The complete fleet of eight GNV ferries is expected to be equipped before the end of the year. The new service was officially launched on May 22 in the port of Genoa on La Superba, a Grandi Navi Veloci cruise ship which can transport 3,000 passengers and 1,000 cars.

Hutchison's Core Profits Fall At Slow, Steady Pace

First-half profits for Li Ka-shing's Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. will be a festival of one-off gains and charges on its sinking telecoms holdings, but core profits will fall sharply as wireless spending offsets growth in energy and infrastructure operations. Hutchison is expected to post a net profit of HK$2.3 billion to HK$19.2 billion (US$295 million-$2.46 billion), depending on the size of provisions it takes on the falling value of Vodafone Plc and Deutsche Telekom, according to brokerage analysts. Hutchison, which has businesses spanning telecoms, container ports, retailing property and energy, will report its results on Thursday. However…
