Coral Leader, a Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) owned by NYK supported the rescue operation of five people including two children onboard yacht. The yacht was in distress in the Mediterranean Sea, just off Corsica.The operation was conducted by French Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) on August 26 (local time) off the coast of France. The second half of 2016 brought shockwaves to some ship owners who were still in a state of denial about the need to install ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) onboard their vessels. The ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention and the announcement of the first U.S. Coast Guard Type Approved BWTS, saw many ship owners rushing to drydock their vessels at the beginning of the year, or deharmonize their IOPP certificates in an attempt to delay fitting a BWTS onboard their ships. Others have already installed a BWTS on board or have decided to install one. Much has been written on the various constraints that are to be faced for selecting and installing a system, but not much has been heard about the systems installed on board. Do they work?

Growth in specialist ship management services leads HK-based Wallem Group to open its first ship management & broking operation in Singapore. The move into Singapore comes six months after Wallem formed a ship management joint venture with mainland shipowner Nanjing Tanker in Singapore, reports the 'South China Morning Post). Captain Deepak Honawar, a director of Wallem Shipmanagement, considered that launching in Singapore would provide more space for the company to grow its Hong Kong ship management business. As a result, it was likely some of the ships currently managed from Hong Kong, along with technical staff, will be transferred to the Singapore operation, which will make room in HK for expansion.

The ID Integrity lost propulsion  power last Friday, about 65 nautical miles east of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park boundary and drifted towards Shark Reef until reached by tug boats on Monday morning and taken in tow to Cairns, reports Ninemsn. "No pollution or injuries to the crew were sustained during the incident, and there was no damage to either Shark Reef or the Great Barrier Reef," the company said in a statement. The company said it would investigate the breakdown. The incident sparked new calls for tougher regulation of ships in the Great Barrier Reef area. The Swedish Club has licensed the Wallem Maritime Training Center Karachi (WMTC Karachi) for Bridge Resource Management (BRM) training. It is the seventh BRM training center to be licensed by the Club. Wallem Shipmanagement now operates three BRM training facilities licensed by the Club, the others being WMTC Moscow and WMTC Mumbai. The licensing of the training center in Karachi will enable Wallem to extend BRM training to its officers and engineers in Pakistan. The BRM courses presented at WMTC Karachi will be managed by Captain Syed Mahmud Raza Rizvi, who recently trained as a Workshop Leader at the SAS Flight Academy, Stockholm. The Pakistan center’s first BRM course is scheduled for early August.

The new company is a joint venture of Cosco Qingdao and Wallem Shipmamangement in HK, and is both companies' first such venture in China. Wallem brings a wealth of international experience to the joint venture and this, coupled, with Cosco's links to PRC crew sources will allow Cosco Wallem to provide a steady supply of ships staff, with full technical support, to its principals. MarineSafety International, Inc., in conjunction with the Great Lakes International Marine Training Center at Georgian College, Owen Sound, Ontario, recently completed a joint training venture. Twenty-eight members of the Great Lakes Pilot Association (GLPA) were trained in Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and the operation of the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). Five courses with a maximum class size of six were conducted during January, February and March.
