The Department of Homeland Security released its final allocations for the FY 2013 Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) awarding $904,035 to the Port of Hueneme and its Port Security Stakeholders. Project stakeholders include our customers, City of Oxnard Police Department, Oxnard Firefighters, City of Port Hueneme Police Department, Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and Ventura County Fire Department.

“This funding is a product of hard work and leveraging partnerships with government and industry leaders. The funds promise to maximize the security and safety of our surrounding communities while we continue to bring jobs and prosperity to the region,” stated Jason Hodge, President of the Board of Port Commissioners.

The funding available totaled $93,207,313, which was divided up among the nation’s successful applicants. The funding is directed towards the improvement of port-wide maritime security risk management; enhanced maritime domain awareness; support maritime security training and exercises; and to maintain or reestablish maritime security mitigation protocols that support the port recovery and resiliency capabilities. The Port and its partners will know the precise project breakout from FEMA when they send further documentation. Port security investments had to address United States Coast Guard (USCG) identified vulnerabilities in port security and support the prevention, detection, response, and/or recovery from attacks involving improvised explosive devices and other nonconventional weapons.

Kristin Decas, Port of Hueneme CEO & Executive Director, said, “This funding allows us to keep pace with advances in new technologies and provides us with the tools to keep our men and women on the frontline prepared and well trained.”

“The projects submitted in this application will maximize the Port’s ability to deliver layered security and build upon and improve projects that have been funded through previous grant rounds. These funds are imperative in sustaining and improving our safety and security here at the Port,” said Christina Birdsey, Director of Operations & Security.
