Korea Shipyard to Build Icebreaking LNG Carrier
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has won the first battle in the war among the shipbuilders to obtain orders for vessels to participate in the Russian Arctic 'Yamal Project' by getting the world’s first order for an icebreaking LNG carrier, reports BusinessKorea. The South Korean shipbuilder informed BusinessKorea that it received the order worth US$367.4 million from Russia’s state-run shipper Sovcomflot, and will deliver the vessel by the end of June 2016.
Ship Glut Burdens LNG Tanker Market, Slashes Profits
Deliveries of new gas tankers have created a glut that is threatening to tip some operators into losses, just as other shipping markets emerge from their worst downturn in decades. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker market was until recently the only bright spot in an otherwise depressed freight industry. A global surge in the demand for gas, led by Japan in 2011, boosted trade, tied vessels to longer routes and drove rental rates to record highs.
Sovcomflot Takes Delivery of Dual-Fuel Power
Sovcomflot, Russia’s largest shipping company, has taken delivery of its latest LNG carrier, the Velikiy Novgorod, from South Korea’s STX Offshore & Shipbuilding. The ship is equipped with a diesel-electric, dual-fuel propulsion system consisting of 2 × MAN 8L51/60DF and 2 × MAN 9L51/60DF engines, offering a total rated power of 34 MW, which were constructed at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Augsburg plant in Germany.

Huge New Northern Sea Route LNG Carrier Named
The new Russian-flag liquefied natural gas (LNG ) carrier was named 'Velikiy Novgorod' at the STX O&S shipyard in the city of Jinhae (South Korea) and becomes the fifth in Gazprom's tanker fleet. Gazprom explain that the Velikiy Novgorod is a gas carrier with membrane cargo tanks and a cargo capacity of 170.2 thousand cubic meters. It has dual-fuel diesel-electric propulsion, which can be powered by LNG, fuel oil or gasoil.
