US-flag Lakes Cargo Volumes Dip in May
U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (lakers) moved 9.5 million tons of cargo in May, a decrease of 12.5 percent compared to a year ago, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reported. The May float was also 5 percent below the month’s five-year average. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry totaled 4.7 million tons, a decrease of 12.4 percent compared to a year. Coal shipments to power plants and steel mills fell to 1.4 million tons, a decrease of nearly 28 percent.

ABB to Power Emission-free Electric Ferries
ABB informs it will supply the complete power and propulsion systems for two HH Ferries Group vessels to become the world´s largest emission-free electric ferries. The modernizations utilize turnkey ABB solutions including batteries, an energy storage control system and Onboard DC Grid technology. At both ends of the route ABB will supply the first automated shore-side charging stations using an ABB industrial robot, to optimize the connection time and therefore maximize the charging period.

Sea Trucks Secures Flotel Contract for Malikai Project
Sea Trucks Group has been awarded a contract from Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited for the provision of flotel services for the Malikai deepwater development project, located 100 kilometers off Sabah, Malaysia, at a water depth of around 500 meters. The platform is located within the area of the Block G Production Sharing Contract in the South China Sea. The scope of work consists of providing accommodation support services for 200 construction personnel.
