Star Software Implemented Aboard Universal Marine Bulkers
Container and bulk shipping company Universal Marine and MirTac, a provider of fleet management solutions, have implemented Star Fleet Management software onboard the new bulk carriers mv Pride and mv Star II. Recently, a joint venture between Universal Shipping & Trading (part of the Universal Marine group) and NedNor, brought the relatively small bulkers mv Pride and mv StarII into service in bareboat charter to carry dry and break bulk along the coasts of the Atlantic.
Modern Power for Next-gen Bulk Carriers
WE Tech Solutions (WE Tech), an energy efficiency solutions provider in the marine industry, has received an order to deliver its direct-drive permanent magnet shaft generator solution to two new 25,600 dwt dual-fueled handysize bulk carriers, with an option for two more. The Switch, a technology specialist of megawatt-class permanent magnet (PM) machines for advanced marine drive trains, will deliver the PM shaft generators to be used in the solutions provided by WE Tech.
World First: Greek Ship Owner Awarded Carbon Credits

CMA CGM Launches Baltic Levant Express Service
Starting May 9, container shipper CMA CGM has launched the new Baltic Levant Express service, offering a direct connection between Saint Petersburg and the Eastern Mediterranean region. US Navy Asks Lockheed to Fix Littoral Combat Ships Issues
The U.S. Navy has sent Lockheed Martin Corp three requests to correct problems, including propulsion-related issues, with the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program dating back to May of last year, a Navy spokesman said on Tuesday. The ships were originally designed as a small, fast and affordable addition to the fleet, but production has been marked by cost increases and delays. Navy officials, however, say the costs have fallen sharply and the ships are performing well.
Maersk Working to Tow Safmarine Meru to Safety
Maersk Line said it is working with Chinese authorities to develop a plan to tow its severely damaged containership Safmarine Meru to safety. On May 7, the Maersk-owed Safmarine Meru was heavily damaged and caught fire after colliding with the German-owned containership Northen Jasper approximately 120 nautical miles east of Ningbo, China. According to Maersk, the fire is under control and external firefighting has concluded with fire tugs remaining nearby to observe any developments.
