Long Beach Cargo Numbers Flat in October
Cargo container numbers at the Port of Long Beach rose 1.1 percent overall in October compared to the same month last year, with congestion issues likely nudging some shipments into November. Still, the Port saw its busiest October since 2010, thanks to a rise in imports. A total of 583,009 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) moved through Long Beach Harbor in October. Imports numbered 310,482 TEUs, up 4.1 percent from October last year. Exports saw a decline of 14.9 percent to 120,445 TEUs.

HHI Names World’s Largest Containership
The world’s largest containership was named at a ceremony held by builder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) this week. The ship, named CSCL Globe, is the first of five 19,000 TEU containerships for China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), and takes the title of world’s largest containership from Maersk Line’s 18,000 teu Triple E class vessels. Measuring 400 meters in length, 58.6 meters in width and 30.5 meters in depth, CSCL Globe is as large as four soccer fields.
Hybrid Ferry Completes Three-month Trial
Corvus Energy announced the completion of the three-month trial of the hybrid ferry MF Finnøy. The refit vessel used a 960V, 260kWh Energy Storage System (ESS) consisting of 40 Corvus Energy AT6500 advanced lithium polymer batteries. The ESS was integrated with the existing drive systems provided by Siemens AS, and powered by two 650kW diesel generators. MF Finnøy, built in 1999, has a capacity of 350 passengers and 110 cars.

Petrojarl Knarr FPSO Earns AoC from PSA Norway
Teekay’s Petrojarl Knarr FPSO has received PSA Norway’s Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC), and has now arrived the Knarr field in the North Sea. The AoC is a statement from the PSA expressing the authorities’ confidence that petroleum activity can be performed by the facility within the regulatory framework. FPSO Petrojarl Knarr is to be used on the Knarr field, where BG Norge AS is the operator. The Knarr field is in the North Sea, around 50 kilometers north-east of Snorre.

Compagnie Maritime Monégasque SAM (CMM) has secured contracts with Petrobras Brazil to charter five newbuild fast oil spill response vessels (OSRVs) with a new fuel-efficient Damen axe-bow design. CMM has secured contracts with Petrobras to charter five newbuild fast oil spill response vessels using a new fuel-efficient Sea Axe design by Damen Shipyards Group, allowing the vessel to reach offshore oil platforms in half the time it takes traditional oil spill response vessels.
Ship Management Contracts for BSI Newbuilds
Norway-based Golden Energy Offshore has entered into management contracts for two platform supply vessels (PSVs) under construction at Ulstein Verft for Blue Ship Invest (BSI). The PX121 designed vessels are due for delivery in the first quarter of 2015. According to the designer, a total of 30 vessels of the ULSTEIN PX121 design have been ordered by various ship owners for construction at shipyards around the world.
