Coast Survey Improves Access to Wrecks Data
Knowing the locations of shipwrecks and other obstructions has always been important for safe navigation ‒ but mariners are not the only people who want to know about wrecks. They are also important for marine archeology, recreational diving, salvage operations, and fishing, among other interests. Now, Coast Survey has improved our Wrecks and Obstructions Database, giving everyone easy access to new records to explore.
Nautical Chart Updated for Charleston Harbor
The new nautical chart 11525 extends eastward, to cover an additional pilot boarding area for vessels headed to the Charleston Harbor. Ships entering the Port of Charleston will have a new and improved nautical chart that covers a larger area to ensure safer navigational approaches into the harbor. Available on the 4th of July, new chart 11525 (Charleston Harbor Entrance and Approach) replaces the old chart 11523 (Charleston Harbor Entrance).
Dept. of Interior Fuel Barge Launched after Repairs
The Greenstone II, a U.S. Department of Interior fuel barge, was relaunched at Port Calcite upon completion of drydocking, repair work and inspections. The barge was hauled out at the Port Calcite facility in late May by Port Calcite Collaborative’s 440-ton Manitowoc 16000 crane. Schwartz Boiler of Cheboygan, Mich. performed the blasting, painting and repair work. Upon inspection and approval by the U.S. Coast Guard, the barge was returned to the water in late June.

GPA Enters Mexican Offshore Market
Seattle-based Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Company Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA) has been awarded a contract to deliver the Design Package and Class Approval Package for two GPA 150M FSVs. The ships for Enterprise Shipping, awarded in a contract to build two Fast Supply Vessels for Petróleos Mexicano (Pemex) earlier in 2014, will be constructed at Maritima de Ecologia S.A. de C.V., (Marecsa), a shipyard in Mazatlán, Mexico.

Great Lakes Limestone Trade Down in June
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes total 7,952,201 tons through June, a decrease of 14.7 percent compared to the same point in 2013. The decrease is even slightly larger when compared to the trade’s long-term average through June: 16.2 percent. Loadings out of U.S. quarries stand at 6.8 million tons through the second quarter, a decrease of 15.7 percent. Shipments from Canadian quarries total 1.1 million tons, a decrease of 8.6 percent.

Murray Fenton India, the Technical Services division of Bibby Ship Management (India) Pvt. Ltd, has been appointed by a consortium of banks as “Lenders Independent Engineers” for the ABG Shipyard Project. This project will require the Murray Fenton India team to monitor the construction of vessels, ship lift projects and expenditure at the ABG shipyards - Magdalla and Dahej - as well as oversee financial disbursements to the yard.
