Fugro Get Shell Malaysia US$250-Million Subsea IMR Contract
The Netherlands-based Fugro Subsea Services inform they have been awarded a long term contract by Sarawak Shell Berhad / Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited (Shell) for the provision of underwater inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) services at their subsea infrastructure across Malaysia. The contract will run for five years with options to extend. Fugro will establish a project office in Miri and a support facility in Labuan.

Sinotrans Shipping have signed contracts for two firm 78,000 DWT Panamax at Jiangnan Shipyard. This order is understood by Clarkson Hellas to have been under discussion for some time, and commits two remaining slots within end 2015 basis the yard’s existing Panamax design. It has also been reported that the same owner has ordered four firm 64,000 DWT Ultramax at Chengxi Shipyard for delivery within 2016, with the deal having been concluded just prior to the Lunar New Year.
STX Offshore & Shipbuilding to Get Increased Bale-Out
Creditors have decided to provide additional liquidity to the shipbuilding unit of ailing STX Group in a move to help it overcome a cash crunch, reports Yonhap News Agency. Citing officials at the main creditors, Korea Development Bank, Yonhap say that more than 75 percent of other creditors approved the rescue measures including 1.8 trillion won (US$1.69 billion) in liquidity supply for STX Offshore & Shipbuilding.
BAE Gets Virginia-class Submarine Propulsor Funding
The US Department of Defense has issued a Navy contract modification to BAE Systems Land and Armaments L.P., Louisville, Ky., to support manufacture of propulsors for two Virginia-class nuclear submarines. The $15,222,617 modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-09-C-4137) has been issued to BAE Systems to supply long lead time materials in support of the manufacture of the Virginia-class submarine propulsors for SSN 792 and SSN 793.
DSME Opens Warship Construction R&D Center
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), which claims to be the world’s second-largest shipbuilder, has opened a research and development center specializing in warships, reports the Korea Times. The center is compromised of 50 researchers in four groups, who will conduct studies on submarines and warships. In addition, the company plans to strengthen R&D facilities at the center by constructing a dedicate building in Mago, Seoul by 2017.
Great Lakes Icebreaking Time Quadrupled by Coast Guard
The US Coast Guard says that its nine Great Lakes icebreakers put in nearly four times as many icebreaking hours the first quarter of this fiscal year as compared to previous years, due to harsh winter weather. Fuel Removed from Grounded Fishing Vessel
The U.S. Navy, in partnership with other federal and local agencies, removed approximately 540 gallons of the remaining diesel fuel from the grounded Japanese commercial fishing vessel Daiki Maru 7 in outer Apra Harbor Feb. 18. On Feb. 16, about 50 gallons of fuel was removed and an additional 540 gallons was removed Feb. 18. The diesel fuel was pumped into containers on shore and then staged in an environmentally safe containment zone for disposal.
