Warships Meet Replenishment Ship at Sea
On January 21, EU Naval Force warships, FS Siroco, FGS Hessen and ESPS Tornado rendezvoused at sea for a joint replenishment at sea (RAS) with the logistics American ship, USNS Joshua Humphreys from Task Force 53. The RAS saw more than 600 men and women from the EU Naval Force gathered in the same sea area in the Somali Basin, with the excellent coordination between all four ships ensuring that the refueling was carried out quickly and efficiently.

Seychelles Coast Guard Begins Basic Training
On Friday 24 January, the Basic Training Program for the Seychelles Coast Guard was officially inaugurated by the Chief of Staff of the Seychelles People’s Defense Forces, Colonel Clifford Roseline, the Acting Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Dine, and the Head of EUCAP Nestor, Etienne de Poncins. The Basic Training Program is a newly developed 27-week foundational training program for privates recently recruited to the Seychelles Coast Guard.

Weather Harms Great Lakes Cargo Totals
Significant weather and ice delays and cancelled cargos limited U.S.-flag cargo movement on the Great Lakes to just 7.1 million tons in December and as a result, the fleet’s year-end total slipped to 89.2 million tons, a decrease of 0.4 percent compared to 2012. Iron ore cargos carried in U.S.-flag lakers totaled 43.9 million tons in 2013, a decrease of 3 percent compared to 2012. Those cargos represented 75.2 percent of all the iron ore moved on the system last year.
Weinberg Reelected Canaveral Board Chairman

Passengers Rescued from Grounded Ship
All passengers and crew of MV Weesam Express 7 were successfully rescued by the personnel of Coast Guard Station (CGS) Cebu from a passenger/cargo vessel which ran aground near Lauis Ledge last night, January 23. In a report made by the Coast Guard District Central Visayas (CGDCV), MV Weesam Express 7 ran aground 1.5 nautical miles southeast of Lauis Ledge around 6:40 p.m. last night while it was en route from Ormoc to Cebu City. Maersk Drilling say that their second and third ultra-deepwater drillships have been named in a ceremony held at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in Geoje-Si, South Korea. Lisa Lance, wife of Ryan M. Lance, chairman and chief executive officer, ConocoPhillips had the honour of naming Maersk Valiant, and Annell R. Bay, Vice President Global Exploration, Marathon Oil Corporation of naming Maersk Venturer.
