Coast Guard, Partners Complete Arctic Oil Recovery Exercise
Members of the Coast Guard Research and Development Center, under the guidance of the Coast Guard’s recently released Arctic Strategy, worked with partner federal agencies and scientific organizations to successfully complete a simulated spilled oil response and recovery exercise aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy on the Arctic ice field Tuesday. The exercise involved air, surface and underwater assets to simulate the detection and recovery of oil from ice-strewn water.
Sterling Builds Massive Dredger
Vessel’s crane is the centerpiece of this state-of-the-art, technologically advanced workhorse platform. Sterling Equipment, Inc., an East Coast marine construction rental company based out of Quincy, Mass., has more than 135 pieces of floating equipment in commission, but its newest barge, a 180- x 65- x 12-foot crane dredge, will be among its largest and most technologically advanced. The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is scheduled to arrive in Portsmouth Friday, at 10 a.m. as part of their 2013 officer candidate training deployment. The Eagle will be moored at 100 High Street in downtown Portsmouth, behind Admirals Landing apartments. Rolls-Royce to Design Gas Turbine for U.K. Combat Ship
Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract to design the gas turbine system for the U.K. Royal Navy’s future Type 26 Global Combat Ship, which will, subject to contract, feature the marine gas turbine Rolls-Royce MT30. Rolls-Royce will work with prime contractor BAE Systems and Tognum, Rolls-Royce’s collaboration with Daimler, to design the advanced propulsion system. This system will combine the Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine with four of Tognum’s MTU high-speed diesel generator sets.

These changes are driven partly by regulation, but more so through technological advances and economic pressures. Ships are evolving. The individuals who operate and maintain those ships must learn new methods of performing their duties in order to keep up.
GE to Supply Avio Aero with Gas Turbine for French Frigate
GE Marine has received an order to supply one LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbine to Avio Aero of Turin, Italy, a GE Marine System Supplier. The gas turbine will power the French Navy’s ninth FREMM frigate. Through Avio Aero, at least 18 LM2500+G4 gas turbines will provide propulsion for the Italian-French FREMM program, which includes six ships for the Italian Navy, 11 ships for the French Navy, and one ship for the Royal Moroccan Navy.

Environmentally acceptable lubricants required in Oil-to-Sea interfaces where technically feasible. With the recent release of the 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP), vessel owner/operators must review their operational practices for incidental discharge of lubricants to the marine environment. Lubricant discharge limits from oil-to-sea interfaces are just one of 27 specific discharge categories covered by the VGP for vessels to achieve compliance with the US Clean Water Act (CWA).
