U.S.-Flag Laker Cargos Down 8.7 Percent
U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (“lakers”) carried 9.2 million tons of dry-bulk cargo in November, a 6.6 percent increase over October’s total that was noticeably impacted by Hurricane Sandy. However, compared to a year ago, the U.S.-flag float was down by almost 9 percent. November’s loadings were also 4 percent below the month’s 5-year average. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry totaled 4.1 million tons in November, a decrease of 11.8 percent compared to a year ago.

New Scientific Survey Ship to Have Kongsberg Survey Suite
Kongsberg Maritime to supply a sophisticated survey suite to a vessel being built by Meyer Werft for a consortium of German universities. The contract, an open tender won amongst tough competition, covers all hydro acoustic aspects of the new build survey vessel 'Tiefsee Forschungs Schiff' (TFS), which has been commissioned to replace the old RV 'Sonne', the current vessel being shared by the same group of German universities.

USACE Wilmington Christen New Survey Boat
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wilmington District name new survey boat 'Swart' at the engineer repair yard. The boat is named after Dirk Swart III (1935-2011) who served as captain and operator of District survey vessel Gillette from 1971 to his retirement in 2002 at the age of 76. Swart was not only the senior survey boat skipper, but he was also the last veteran of World War II to retire from the Wilmington District.
Somali Pirates Sleep Not
EU Naval Force Belgian Frigate 'BNS Louise-Marie' apprehends five suspected pirates off Somali coast. Directed to the scene by ship's helicopter, BNS Louise-Marie issued verbal warnings to the skiff whose crew quickly raised their hands. The boarding party was deployed to apprehend the five suspected pirates on board the skiff, which was equipped with a ladder and a boarding hook, and it eventually taken on board the frigate.
Dredging Contract Will Aid Fraser River BC Communities
Vital access channels in the Fraser River in Steveston & Ladner will be kept navigable by a US$ 10-million joint dredging contract. Economic activity in the area will be facilitated as a result of unprecedented collaborative work bringing together a $10 million joint commitment by Port Metro Vancouver, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Corporation of Delta, and the City of Richmond.

New Seismic Survey Boat: NAMJet Waterjet Propelled
Norwegian shipbuilder Westplast AS chooses US-based NAMJet propulsion for its latest seismic survey vessel WP950. Designed as a global support platform for oil and gas industry seismographic research, the WP950 will also be used for streamer cable replacements. The boat is powered by twin 295-horsepower (hp) Yanmar diesels paired to twin TRAKTOR® Jet TJ 381 (15-inch) waterjets capable of propelling the 31-foot, 15,653-pound (7100 kg) craft to top speeds of 28 knots.

Transocean's fleet update summary includes new contracts, significant changes to existing contracts, and changes in estimated OofS time. The value of new contracts or extensions since the November 18, 2012 fleet update summary is approximately US$119=million. Estimated 2012 out of service time (OofS increased by a net 40 days, including 22 days to complete repairs on the Henry Goodrich and 19 days to complete work scope on the GSF Explorer.

TY Offshore, LLC announce the launch of FMT 3248, the fourth of fourteen 297’6” x 54’ x 12’, 30,000 barrel tank barges for FMT Industries, LLC, one of the several companies within the Florida Marine Group (Florida Marine). FMT Industries has recently exercised its option for four additional barges from its original order of ten.
HII Make New Executive Appointments
Huntington Ingalls Industries announces new executive appointments for Investor Relations and Internal Audit. HII appoint Dwayne Blake corporate vice president, investor relations, and Scott Stabler corporate vice president, internal audit, effective Jan. 1, 2013. Blake, formerly the corporate vice president, internal audit, is replacing Andy Green, who is leaving the corporate staff for a position at HII's Newport News Shipbuilding division (NNS).
USMMA Golf Fundraisers Set 2013 Competition Dates
The Heidmar Blue & Gray Golf Classics are fundraisers for the U.S Merchant Marine Academy and its Department of Athletics. The tour nets over $400,000 annually and is attended by USMMA alumni, parents, friends and members of the international maritime community. In 2012, the tour saw 1,274 golfers which is the third-highest total of all time. Final 2012 proceeds are predicted to be near record numbers as the tour continues to grow in scope and size.
