Gen2 Energy Awards Design Contract for Two Hydrogen Carriers
Norwegian ship designer Sirius Design & Integration has won a contract with Norway-based company Gen2 Energy AS to design two specialized ships for the transport of large quantities of containers with compressed hydrogen.The Gen2 container carriers will be about 190 meters long and will be able to carry 500 40-foot containers."The vessels will be designed with the aim of leaving the least possible climate footprint. Using hydrogen in the propulsion systems of the vessels will be part of the design work.
GIA Task Force Met in Sweden
The Global Industry Alliance (GIA), a key International Maritime Organization (IMO) initiative supporting ship decarbonisation, is set to be extended to 2023, in line with the time-frame of IMO’s Initial greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) Strategy.The UN body announced that the extension follows two years of good progress by the initiative, whose 6th Task Force meeting took place in Gothenberg, Sweden this week (25 June).The task force discussed developments in a number of on-going projects, including the upcoming release of the first of three ‘Energy Efficient Ship Operation’ e-learning courses, which will be made available free of charge.Work is progressing on the second course…

Project Forward Initiative Cuts CO2 Emissions
The Project Forward initiative led by Athens-Based Arista Shipping, with Wärtsilä as one of the participants, demonstrates that with LNG as fuel, an advanced hull design, and highly efficient propulsion machinery, it will be possible to meet the IMO’s target for a 40 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.Model tests of the Project’s concept vessel indicate that the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is well below the currently most stringent Phase III level. Mitsubishi, Wärtsilä Joins for Improved Power and Propulsion Solution
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., LTD (MHI-MME) and the smart technology group Wärtsilä have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the commercial marketing of a new energy solution for ships. The solution combines innovative technologies from both companies to produce greater power generation capacity and higher propeller propulsion for marine vessels. By integrating MHI-MME's waste heat recovery and energy saving power generation system (WHRS) with Wärtsilä's operational control technology for shaft generator systems, the new solution results in more energy efficient ship navigation and an improved Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).
Sino-Danish Focus on Energy Efficient Ships
A delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Industry is visiting Denmark as part of the cooperation between the two Administrations. A Danish-Chinese workshop on energy efficient ship design and marine equipment will be held during the three-day visit. The workshop will be attended by the Danish Maritime Authority, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and other Chinese authorities, as well as shipowners, marine equipment manufacturers, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Danish Maritime. Breaking Down Barriers to Energy-Efficient Shipping
International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s work to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping has conducted in Mumbai, India with a train-the-trainer course on energy-efficient ship operation. The course (28 February – 3 March) is training maritime educators and officials to pass on expertise on the complex technical and regulatory aspects designed to make shipping greener. Thirty participants from Indian, Bangladeshi, Maldivian and Sri Lankan maritime training institutes, maritime administrations and classification societies are taking part. The training includes group exercises in which the participants develop and deliver presentations on barriers to ship energy efficiency.
Philippines Putting Energy-Efficient Shipping on the Curriculum
The Philippines is the latest country to receive International Maritime Organization (IMO) support to promote energy-efficient ship operation. A workshop taking place in Manila (23-24 February) is equipping 30 maritime educators from across the country with the knowledge to introduce the topic of ship energy-efficiency into their teaching curriculums. World’s First Full Scale Numerical Modelling Workshop

Nominations Open for Singapore International Maritime Awards 2017
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is calling for nominations for the Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA) 2017. The biennial IMA recognises individuals and companies for their outstanding contributions to Singapore's development as a premier global hub port and a leading international maritime centre. The following award categories for IMA 2017 are now open for nomination. Please refer to Annex A for details. The nomination forms and assessment criteria for IMA 2017 are available here. Nominations will close on 6th Jan 2017. The SRS Green Ship of the Year Award, which recognises quality Singapore-registered ship with energy efficient ship designs, is the eighth award category.
GloMEEP Project Forges Ahead with Train-the-Trainer Workshop
A global Train-the-Trainer workshop on energy efficiency has been delivered in China (23-27 May), preparing the personnel needed to cascade knowledge on energy efficiency for ships and related efforts for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. The five-day intensive course was organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), within the framework of the Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) Project. The workshop was co-hosted by the China Maritime Safety Administration (China MSA) and Dalian Maritime University (DMU). The GloMEEP Project aims to support increased uptake and implementation of energy-efficiency measures for shipping. China is one of the ten Lead Pilot Countries implementing the GloMEEP Project.

MPA Rewarded for Green Practices
The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) clinched top honours at this year's Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards. MPA has won two of the three titles given to the sector, including the overall Outstanding Singapore Environmental Achievement Award. It was also named joint-winner for the public sector category together with the Nanyang Technological University. At an event organised by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) on Wednesday, (Aug 26) MPA was presented the Outstanding Singapore Environmental Achievement Award. The green awards were launched in 1997 to inspire local commitment to corporate best practices in the environment. MPA launched the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative in 2011 with an investment of S$100 million.
IMO Signs Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships Project
International Maritime Organization (IMO) the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed an agreement to allocate US$2.0 million to a two-year global maritime energy efficiency partnership project, which aims to support increased uptake and implementation of energy-efficiency measures for shipping. The so-called GloMEEP project, formally designated “Transforming the Global Maritime Transport Industry towards a Low Carbon Future through Improved Energy Efficiency”, will focus in particular on building capacity to implement technical and operational measures in developing countries, where shipping is increasingly concentrated.
Next Generation Bridge Concept
For decades the maritime industry has long-theorized of emulating the “airline model” in uniformity and technical capability of its own ship and boat integrated bridge platform. Enter Rolls-Royce and the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland which together have launched a ship intelligence system that it believes could be the next major transition for the shipping, able to gather, process and reasonably present increasing amounts of complex and high-level data from onboard systems to manage propulsion, navigation and potentially lead .to autonomous vessels.
Rolls-Royce, VTT Unveil Futuristic Bridge Concept
Rolls-Royce, together with VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, unveiled its latest vision of Ship Intelligence, a bridge concept which it said could become reality by 2025. Rolls-Royce has worked together with VTT’s researchers and Aalto University to develop the new bridge, known as the Future Operator Experience Concept or ‘oX’. It offers the crew smart workstations, which automatically recognize individuals when they walk into the bridge and adjust to their own preferences.
