Red Crescent reports that at least four migrants have died when two boats capsize near the coast of Libya

The Libyan Red Crescent reported on Saturday that at least four people died when two boats with 95 irregular migrants capsized near the Libyan city of Al Khums, on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, the Red Crescent confirmed that four migrants on board the first boat died.

Red Crescent said that the second boat was carrying 69 migrants including two Egyptians, and dozens Sudanese. However, it did not specify their fate.

Khums, a coastal town, is located 118 km from Tripoli, the capital.

The International Organization for Migration reported on Wednesday that 42 migrants were presumed to be dead and missing after a rubber-hulled boat capsized near the Al Buri offshore facility, located north-northwest off the coast of Libya.

Since the 2011 fall of Muammar Gadhafi, the dictator who was supported by NATO in his uprising against the regime, Libya has become an important transit point for migrants trying to reach Europe via the Mediterranean.

The Khums Red Crescent released pictures showing a line-up of dead bodies covered in black plastic bags on the ground, with volunteers providing first aid.

The rescued migrants are shown in other pictures sitting on the ground, wrapped in thermal blankets.

In the statement, it was noted that Khums Port Security Agency and Coast Guards participated in the rescue. The bodies were then handed over to authorities on the instructions of the public prosecutor.

A group of 61 migrants' bodies was found on the coast of Tripoli in mid-October. IOM reported that at least 50 people died in September after a boat carrying 75 Sudanese refugee caught fire off the coast of Libya.

At a U.N. conference in Geneva last week, several states, including Britain, Spain and Sierra Leone, called on Libya to close the detention centers where, according to rights groups, migrants and refugees were tortured, abused, and even killed.
