WISTA India conducted its second AGM on the 19th of September 2014, at the conference hall of the Narottam Morarjee Institute in Mumbai. The AGM was attended by 23 members of WISTA, and was presided over by WISTA India President, Ms Sanjam Sahi Gupta and the members of the Executive Committee.

The AGM was followed by an open discussion session, where the Joint DG of Shipping, Mr Deepak Shetty, was invited to talk to the members and prospective members of the association. The discussions were centred around the realities in the maritime sector and the proposals for increasing women participation in the industry. The session saw a lot of constructive ideas and participation from the WISTA crowd, and conclusive agreements were arrived at regarding the various concerns in the shipping industry. A gesture of honour was made by Mr Shetty to WISTA, by means of a formal invitation to jointly work on a proposal on how the Government of India can promote the role of women in shipping. This will be taken up by a committee headed by S Priya ,advocate and WISTA member and the proposal will be submitted to the DG once completed. Ms Sanjam Sahi Gupta comments on this that, “ These are small steps to achieving our ultimate goal of increasing participation of women in the maritime sector”.

Ms Kavita Singh, Head of HR Maersk India, also addressed the members and held a discussion on ‘Skill sets for growth’, with emphasis on the various means to identify and develop an individual to add to the company’s overall growth. The session was highly interactive and brought out a lot of key points on the required skill sets for every individual within their respective roles at work.

The WISTA India Newsletter was officially released by Mr Deepak Shetty, and gifts of appreciation were presented by Ms Sanjam Sahi Gupta to the invitees, after which members were invited to interact and discuss over high tea. The AGM was concluded successfully and the discussions thereafter showed the drive within the association to constantly move ahead with new ideas and zeal.
