Canadian Ferries Welcome Govt. Funding

The Canadian Ferry Operators Association (CFOA) welcomed today’s announcement of $58 million over two years to support ferries in Eastern Canada.

“We are happy to see the government reaffirming its commitment to Canada’s ferries.  This is a step in the right direction,” said Serge Buy, CEO of CFOA.  “We hope that this support continues through larger funding programs like the Building Canada Fund.”

This funding will help support ferry operations and assets for three interprovincial ferries: Saint John, NB / Digby, NS (operated by Bay Ferries Ltd); Wood Islands, PEI / Caribou, NS (operated by Northumberland Ferries Ltd) and Îles-de-la-Madeleine, QC / Souris, PEI (Operated by C.T.M.A. Traversier Ltée).

“Many people in eastern Canada take ferries on a regular basis, making them a key component of regional infrastructure,” Buy added. “They are a crucial part of Canada’s transportation system and deserve proper funding to keep them safe and efficient.”

CFOA said ferries are an integral part of Canada’s transportation system.  Collectively, CFOA’s members run a fleet of almost 180 ferries that employ approximately 8,400 people, help generate more than 22,600 jobs and carry nearly 40.7 million passengers and nearly 14.8 million vehicles annually.
