The U.S. State Department has issued a statement in which it “strongly condemns” the bombing of a Greek-operated oil tanker near Derna, Libya on January 4 that killed two crewmen.
“The ongoing escalation of violence in Libya against civilian commercial interests further widens a conflict that is fundamentally political and threatens the integrity, unity, neutrality and independence of Libya’s critical institutions, including the National Oil Company,” the statement said.
The statement continued, “The United States remains committed to working with the international community to help the Libyan people establish an inclusive system of government that addresses their core needs, preserves and protects key Libyan institutions, establishes stability and security and addresses the ongoing threats to Libya’s democratic transition.”
