USCG Conducts Medevac
The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 69-year-old-female Sunday 56 miles south of Nantucket.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s 1st District command center received a call from the cruise ship Norwegian Gem requesting a medevac of a 69-year-old woman suffering from possible internal injuries at approximately 9 a.m. Sunday.
An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched shortly before 10 a.m. and arrived on scene at approximately 11 a.m at which time they hoisted the woman from the deck of the vessel.
The Jayhawk crew brought the woman to Barnstable Municipal Airport at around noon where she was transferred to local Emergency Medical Services personnel.
EMS was expected to transport the woman to Cape Cod Hospital. The Norwegian Gem is a 965-foot cruise ship homeported out Nassau, Bahamas.
“This is the second medevac Air Station Cape Cod has conducted today,” said Lt. Cmdr. Scott Higbee, Coast Guard 1st District’s command center chief. “Visibility was limited due to the weather, but thanks to the professionalism of the Norwegian Gem’s crew the medevac was a success.”
Air Station Cape Cod is responsible for the waters from New Jersey to the Canadian border.
