MAIB Determines Injury

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

October 1, 2004

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) issued its report on the investigation of the injury to the bosun on a RoRo ship while berthing at Europort Terminal, River Thames on March 21. The bosun’s leg was broken when a mooring line snapped. Both the wind and the current were pushing the ship off the berth. The primary reason for the casualty was that the mooring line was severely deteriorated. Ad hoc mooring line inspections had failed to detect the poor condition of the line. The ship managers have now implemented a planned maintenance regime for mooring lines. Report No. 12/2004 HK Law
