CG Foundation Hosts Tribute to Fourteenth District
The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced that its Annual Tribute to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Fourteenth District will take place on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. The event will highlight the major accomplishments of the fourteenth district from the Hawaiian Islands to Guam, and celebrate the service of all of the fourteenth district guardians who enforce maritime law, protect our homeland and preserve the environment. The tribute will raise funds to support the Coast Guard Foundation’s important projects and programs including the Shipmate Fund that provides morale, wellness, recreation and education funds for enlisted members.
For over forty years, the Coast Guard Foundation has given support to the Coast Guard. In 2010, the Foundation aided Coast Guard members serving in Hawaii through the Shipmate Fund, awarding 10 cutters, stations and units throughout the district with Rosetta Stone language materials to help Coast Guard personnel learn Chinese, Korean and Filipino (Tagalog). A greater understanding of these languages will not only aid in communications with military, commercial and recreational mariners, but also help ensure greater safety at sea.
To aid in the health, fitness and well-being of Station Kauai crewmembers, the Foundation donated equipment that has allowed the Kauai-based Coast Guard station to establish a complete outdoor recreation program. Equipment includes stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, mountain bikes, fishing gear, kneeboards and a tow tube. This gift also provides an opportunity for individuals to explore the island and become more integrated members of the community.
“The Coast Guard has been an important member of the Hawaiian community – patrolling local waters; protecting mariners at sea; rescuing kayakers, paddle boarders, divers and others,” said Anne Brengle, president of the Coast Guard Foundation. “We are proud of our efforts to help the men and women of the fourteenth district, including coming to the aid of the Coast Guard families who lost their loved ones in a training accident in 2008 out of Air Station Barber’s Point.”
The Tribute to the United State Coast Guard Fourteenth District will be co-hosted by Dinner Committee Chairpersons Steven Baker, president Hawaii Pilots Association, and William F. Anonsen, managing partner and principal, The Maritime Group. The event will be attended by Anne Brengle, Coast Guard Foundation Directors and Trustees residing in the fourteenth district, James Andrasick, Bob Halcro, Captain F. David Hoffman Jr. USCG (ret.), and Captain John P. Mihlbauer USCG (ret.); as well as Dinner Committee Members Fred Anawati, Vic Angoco, Captain Sandy Brodie USCG (ret.), Dudley Fullard-Leo, Captain Allan Gifford USCG (ret.), Dale Hahn, Glenn Hong, Karl Kiyokawa, Ed Lott III USCG (aux.), Rear Admiral Jim McClelland USCG (ret.), Bob C. McDermott, Cheryl Uyehara, Lee Webber and Mark Winslow.
