Hamburg, India Sea Trade Up by 17%

In the 2019 first half, 106,000 TEU - 20-ft standard containers - were handled in Hamburg on direct services with Indian ports, a gain of 17 percent. This brought India up into tenth place in Hamburg’s ranking of its trading partners for container transport.

With Hapag Lloyd and its partner shipowners ONE, YML and COSCO offering an additional weekly sailing from Hamburg on the IEX - South-East India–Europe Express service from November onwards, the prospects for further growth are good.

Ten liner services link the Port of Hamburg with India. Of these, four are container liner services, three are Ro-Ro services transporting vehicles, and three are general cargo services, also taking heavy cargo, plant and project shipments.

Currently, ANL, APL, Chipolbrok, CMA CGM, Cosco Shipping, Hamburg Süd, Hapag-Lloyd, Höegh Autoliners, Maersk Line, MOL RoRo, MSC, NYK RoRo, ONE, Rickmers-Line, SAL and Van Uden are the shipping companies sailing between Hamburg and India. Shipping Corporation of India - S.C. India - is represented in Hamburg by a container service operated jointly with MSC.

Transit times between Hamburg and the Indian sub-continent are around two weeks to the West coast, and three to the East coast. The Elbe hub is linked with the Indian ports of Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Mumbai, Chennai, Ennore, Kolkata, Cochin, Kandla, Tuticorin, Visakhapatnam, Krishnapatnam, Hazira and Haldia.

Containerships with slot capacities of 6,000-13,000 TEU and multi-purpose freighters with capacities of between 12,000 and 30,000 tons are deployed on ocean services with India.
 
The Port of Hamburg is served in Mumbai by the Hamburg Representative Office. Apart from their work on City of Hamburg projects, Peter Deubet and Lea Miram there also look after the port’s affairs and are partners in organizing the 8th India Week in Hamburg.
