Davie has been awarded a contract from the government of Canada for the Vessel Life Extension (VLE) of Canadian Coast Guard Ship CCGS Earl Grey, the shipyard announced today.

CCGS Earl Grey is a Medium Endurance Multi-Tasked Vessel used by the Canadian Coast Guard to perform a variety of roles including icebreaking, primarily offshore Prince Edward Island.

The vessel’s nine-month life extension program will take place in Davie’s secondary drydock, the Lorne dock. The program primarily consists of replacements and upgrades to engines, machinery, equipment and electrical systems.

Alan Bowen, Davie’s CEO, commented, “This contract represents the third Coast Guard vessel refit program in the past 12 months as well as the first time the Lorne drydock, our smaller drydock, has been used since the Royal Canadian Navy frigate construction programs. We look forward to developing further programs with the Government of Canada which help to grow our workforce and sustain Davie's crucial role in the local economy, while simultaneously providing an affordable and timely service to the federal fleet.”

The Honorable Gail Shea, Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, commented, “Our Government is committed to providing our men and women of the Canadian Coast Guard with the tools and equipment they need to perform their important duties while creating jobs and opportunities for Canadians. Our unprecedented investments to renew the Coast Guard fleet ensure the safety of our Canadian mariners.”
