Harbour authority Associated British Ports(ABP) has welcomed SMS Towage’s new tug, called Manxman.Manxman has 5,600 brake horsepwoer, offering more power than seven Ferraris and cost GBP5mln.The tug was built by international shipyard group Damen, based in Holland. Associated British Ports (ABP) announced a major new agreement which sees Dutch shortsea specialist Thor Shipping & Transport commit 10 years to The Port of Hull.In addition, ABP has invested GBP6 million into Thor’s 10-acre leased terminal, allowing substantial infrastructure improvement works and an additional 2.5 acres of container storage space. As part of this key investment, in March 2019, a hybrid £3.5 million Liebherr harbour crane will arrive, to bolster eco-friendly operations for many years to come.Since July 2014 Thor has trebled its tonnage through the two-berth terminal on King George Dock. It has a regular container and breakbulk service from its own short sea operator - Sunline - connecting the UK with the East Coast of Sweden twice a week.

Samskip is launching a new shortsea service connecting Antwerp and Hull, in an expansion of its continent-UK multimodal network that also sees it debut at Belgium’s largest port.The intermodal logistics company  said in a press release that the initial schedule offers a twice weekly short sea container service, with its first departure from Antwerp on the 12th October.The service will be operated by a 508TEU capacity vessel, sailing from ATO's multimodal terminal on Tuesday and Saturday and ABP Port of Hull on Thursday and Monday.This new connection is in addition to Samskip's existing shortsea services connecting Rotterdam with Tilbury, Hull and Grangemouth (eight per week) and the recent three times weekly Amsterdam-Hull service.

Scotland based MacDuff Ship Design reports it has had another busy summer and autumn with the delivery of a number of new vessels, work continuing on existing contracts and several new design contracts won. Alongside this has seen the continuation of the companies bureau work in naval architectural consultancy and the steady expansion of MacDuff Marine Surveyors. A new 25.5m Aquaculture Support Vessel has entered service on the West Coast of Scotland having been delivered in September 2017 to owners Inverlussa Marine Services.

The biggest container ship in the world, the MSC Maya, made its maiden call at Southampton on Tuesday 15 December. The 395.4m vessel, which can carry a world-leading 19,224 containers, is just the latest giant container vessel to call at the port in recent weeks. As well as being the biggest, the vessel, which is named after Maya Aponte the four-year-old daughter of MSC President and CEO Diego Aponte, uses cutting-edge technology to make it one of the greenest vessels on the sea. She is the first of the four Oscar class vessels to call at the port’s container terminal. Her visit is just another record-breaking call for SCT5, the £110m new 500m berth at the container terminal, operated by DP World Southampton and opened by Olympic sailing legend Sir Ben Ainslie in March 2014.

Investment of more than £4 million in a purpose-built facility for the storage of dry bulk cargoes has given Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Hull a pioneering multi-purpose warehouse facility which will be used to store biomass. The building, which took almost a year to construct, boasts a range of features which makes it the only one of its kind in operation in the UK. History was made at ABP’s Port of Teignmouth with the visit of its first ever cruise ship. The Hebridean Princess, a luxury cruise ship, arrived from Dartmouth carrying 50 passengers. They were welcomed by the town officials before embarking on a day trip around Teignmouth, which included a visit to Compton Castle. The cruise ship departed Teignmouth in the evening, to the sounds of a sea shanty group bidding them farewell. It may be the first cruise call but the Port of Teignmouth is a thriving facility handling more than 400,000 tonnes of cargo each year and playing a key role in the supply chains of regional industries. South Wales maritime engineering company Mustang Marine has rebranded as Mainstay Marine Solutions. The Pembroke Dock based workboat, marine energy device and waterside infrastructure specialist has adopted a new name and corporate image following its first year under new ownership. The company, which was bought out of administration in May 2014 by a group of nine investors, said it has thrived under its new ownership and is on course to double its workforce compared to 12 months ago, increasing from 27 employees in June 2014 to 60 today.

Europe’s commercial marine and workboat exhibition held in a working port, Seawork International, has released its plans for demonstrations, launches and conferences. Organizers say Voith will announce a new marine propulsion system that produces more thrust, reduces noise and vibration, while cutting operating costs. The Smart Surfaces’ Duplex fouling from Tudor Streamline Surfaces will debut at Seawork, which is expected to attract considerable interest from commercial boat operators having been initially developed by the U.S.

An AIS base station was later added at Spurn Point in addition to further Radar upgrades by ABP. Kongsberg Norcontrol IT has now updated the complete system to the latest version of its VTMIS5060 at Spurn, Immingham and Hull. Spurn Point continues to provide the Humber Estuary VTS Centre functions, while Immingham has been configured for Disaster Recovery and Emergency operations.

Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Southampton and VT Halmatic have signed a marine services contract. VT Halmatic will provide a Fleet Contract Hire Scheme to ABP Southampton, one of the UK’s largest and busiest ports. ABP Southampton’s existing pilot, survey and patrol fleet comprising seven vessels will be procured by VT Halmatic and leased back on a fully supported contract for ten years, incorporating a six-vessel replacement programme. The first replacement vessels will be delivered to ABP’s Gosport Pilotage Station before the end of 2003 with further vessels coming on line over the duration of the contract. The new pilot cutters will be the well-proven Halmatic Nelson 48/50.
