F21 Torpedo Launch Test from Nuclear Attack Sub
Naval Group performed a new launch of the F21 torpedo in the frame of the Artémis program led by the French Defence Procurement Agency (Direction Générale de l’Armement -DGA). In the medium term, the DGA aims to equip all the French Navy's submarines with this heavy torpedo. This launch was performed early May from a nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN). The F21 was launched under the authority of the DGA in a DGA Missiles Testing’s underwater acoustic range off the Hyères coast.

Cat Dealer Technician Competition
To recognize the "best of the best" Cat Marine Dealer service technicians, Caterpillar Engine Products Division developed the TEC Masters Top Gun Competition. Throughout the past year, 211 North American Cat Marine Dealer service technicians completed three training modules on electronic diesel engine systems. The 19 scoring the highest competed against each other in a national finals competition that included a written exam, hands-on diesel engine troubleshooting and a test on customer service skills. The day-long event provided contestants with 45 minutes to correctly troubleshoot twin "bugged" Cat electronic engines aboard a mid-sized sportfishing boat. An example of the problem they were faced with was low power. They needed to identify the problem and correct it.

LRAD Get Navy Acoustic Hailer Contract
US Department of Defense, Navy, awards LRAD Corp. of San Diego, a US$12,231,360 order for its products. The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract is for for small, medium and large acoustic hailing devices, mounts, test teardown and evaluation, provision item order spares, and data. Small, medium and large acoustic hailing devices will be used by the Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Afloat Program Office (PMS 480) and/or other Department of Defense Activities. Acoustic hailing devices will be used in support of large and small deck naval surface ships, submarines, security boats, shore security operations and others as warning devices employed in anti-terrorism/force protection missions.

Fugro Chance Completes Acoustic Metrology
Fugro Chance Inc. recently performed non-typical acoustic metrologies on four proposed jumpers in the Gulf of Mexico. By industry standards the measurements were completed in a substantially short time frame, the company said. A typical metrology takes approximately 12 hours for one measurement, resulting in an anticipated operational time of around 48 hours in total. However, these non-typical acoustic metrologies were completed with accurate results in just 33 hours. Two standard Sonardyne Compatt 6 transponders and two Sonardyne Lodestar GyroCompatts (LGCs) were used to acquire tilt magnitude and direction from manifold pressure caps to wellhead casings. Four Compatts were used to ensure repeatable results.

Fugro Chance Tackles Noisy Acoustic Metrology Project
Fugro Chance Inc. provided 3D acoustic metrology on a large 36-inch diameter spool piece, despite environmental and logistical challenges. The highly accurate metrology was performed from a platform in Enlace Litoral Tabasco, Gulf of Mexico at a water depth of 25 meters. Active lines from the platform created a noisy auditory environment and the shallow water depth provided additional challenges in the long baseline (LBL) acoustic operations. Once measurements were finalized, the spool piece was welded to the existing pipeline and then set back down on the seabed.

Kongsberg’s New DP Product is HAIN
Kongsberg has now developed a new DP reference product, the HAIN Positioning Reference system, based on Integration of Acoustic Positioning and Inertial Navigation principles. Acoustic and Inertial positioning principles in combination are ideal, since their qualities complement each other. Acoustic positioning is characterised by relatively high and evenly distributed noise and no drift in the position, while Inertial positioning has very low short-term noise and relatively large drift in the position over time. The HAIN Positioning Reference system is very easy to install; a standard Kongsberg computer onboard the vessel interfaces the small Inertial Measurement Unit and the Acoustic Positioning system (HiPAP or HPR).

Born five years ago, ABB’s remote diagnostics service (RDS) is still in its infancy. But this brainchild of service technology is growing fast – and its future looks bright. The quality of ABB’s marine after sales service is stepping up a notch with the opening of a new control center in Norway and the addition of remote diagnostics service (RDS) connections fitted to vessels in shipyards. Systems specialists are available from a control center just outside Oslo to troubleshoot faults in electrical installations onboard ships anywhere in the world.
ATC Gets USS Harry S. Truman Contract
American Technology Corporation (ATC) received another order for NeoPlanar-based SoundSaber acoustic panels for installation in the hangar bays of nuclear powered aircraft carriers. The order and installation for the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) comes on the heels of the successful installation of SoundSaber acoustic panels aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) in December 2005. The aggregate amount of the orders is approximately $405,000. The SoundSaber acoustic panels are a part of a mission critical system for general announcing and emergency notification. The SoundSaber line has passed Grade “A” shock and vibration and received a Common Intelligibility Standard grade of 0.95 out of 1.00; typical outdoor public address systems grade between 0.75 and 0.79.
Harris Receives $15 Million Contract to Provide Acoustic Sensors
Harris Corp received a $15 million, 4 year follow-on contract to provide acoustic sensors for installation on the U.S. Navy’s Virginia-class submarines. The sensors are designed to facilitate data sharing between the LWWAA system and the submarine’s combat platform for monitoring of ships and other vessels. Jim Brunelle, director of undersea systems business at Harris, said the 10 new systems will accompany the 18 acoustic assemblies Harris has already delivered to the Navy for use on its submarines.
Nautronix Wins DP Contract from Rowan
Nautronix will supply their NASDrill RS925 Positioning System to Rowan’s new Ultra-Deepwater Drillships. Nautronix have been awarded a contract to supply NASDrill RS925 deepwater acoustic positioning system for Rowan’s new ultra-deepwater drillships. The vessels will be constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, Korea and are based on a Hyundai Gusto P1000 design. The first vessel will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2013, with the second one estimated to be completed in 2014. Nautronix received orders for their NASDrill RS925 systems through a well known Norwegian DP Supplier who will supply their Dynamic Positioning (DP) System for these vessels.

Nautronix to Supply Rowan’s Third New Ultra-Deepwater Drillship
Nautronix has been awarded another contract to supply NASDrill RS925 deepwater acoustic positioning system, for Rowan’s third new ultra-deepwater drillship. The vessel will be constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, Korea and will be based on a Hyundai Gusto P1000 design. The vessel will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2014. Technip completes 21 subsea jumper metrology operations using Sonardyne International's Lodestar GyroCompatts & saves 8 days working time. Using the latest Wideband Long BaseLine (LBL) acoustic positioning hardware by optimising its technique, Technip was able to complete each metrology operation in an average of 13 hours, with one such operation conducted in only 8 hours. Subsea metrology requires accurate, precise and robust acoustic measurements so that a spool or jumper can be successfully fabricated and installed.

Aker Solutions is buying Separation Specialists Inc., a California-based provider of produced water de-oiling products and field services, which strengthens the international oil services company's position in the produced water de-oiling segment. "With the acquisition of Separation Specialists, we are able to offer a complete produced water de-oiling solution from one vendor. There is also an excellent cultural fit between the two entities, which we look forward to further developing," says David Merle, head of Aker Solutions' process systems business. Aker Solutions will immediately be able to offer Separation Specialists' products, such as nutshell filters (NSF), mechanical induced gas flotation (IGF) and field services, through its global distribution and execution network.
