WesternGeco Awarded Contract
ExxonMobil Exploration has awarded WesternGeco a multiproject Q-Marine contract to cover three ExxonMobil assets in West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico, and the North Sea. Q is the WesternGeco proprietary suite of advanced seismic technologies for enhanced reservoir location, description, and management. The surveys will be conducted by the Geco Topaz and the Western Neptune, two of the four WesternGeco Q-Technology vessels. The North Sea and Gulf of Mexico surveys are underway, with the West Africa survey scheduled for later in the year.
JV for 3D seismic in Arctic
Paris-listed seismic giant CGG and Russia's largest shipowner, SCF Group (Sovcomflot), have formally registered a joint-venture company focused on coldwater surveys, reports Interfax. The joint venture, to be called Arctic Geophysical Exploration (AGE), will be 51 per cent owned by Sovcomflot and 49 per cent owned by CGG. Fugro Signs Contract for New Vessels
Fugro has signed a contract with BMV (Bergen Yards) in Norway for building two new vessels. The contract consists of building one seismic vessel and one ROV offshore construction support vessel with a combined value of around $220.1m. The first ship is a seismic vessel and the vessel will be outfitted at BMV (Bergen Yards) in Bergen, Norway. The vessel will have a length of 108 m and a maximum breadth of 28 m and will be equipped with 16 tow points and the latest and most advanced seismic technology. The vessel will be delivered to Fugro in August 2010 and will operate world wide. The second vessel is a DP II ROV/offshore construction support vessel. This vessel will also be outfitted at BMV (Bergen Yards) and will have a length of 111 m and a breadth of 24 m.
OFFSHORE: Shell Invests in Major New GOM Discovery
Shell announced a multi-billion dollar investment to develop its major Cardamom oil and gas field in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). The Cardamom project is expected to produce 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) a day at peak production and more than 140 million boe over its lifetime.“Technological advances in seismic imaging and drilling have allowed us to both discover and access this new field,” said Marvin Odum, Shell Upstream Americas Director. “This is another sizeable deep-water investment by Shell that strengthens energy supplies to the USA. Seismic Vessel to be Refit at Shipdock Amsterdam
Ship repair and conversion yard Shipdock Amsterdam, part of Damen Shipyards Group, received a contract for the propulsion upgrade of the 3D Seismic Vessel Polarcus Naila. The ultra-modern vessel will arrive at Shipdockin February 2014 for its six-week conversion. In addition to the propulsion upgrade the vessel will also undergo modification works in order to be classified as a Special Purpose Ship. Furthermore, the scope of work includes Ballast Water Treatment installation, installation of a new workboat and davits, relocation of the MOB and the five-year special survey.
Alewijnse to Refit Seismic Vessel Polarcus Naila
Systems integrator Alewijnse Marine Systems has been awarded the contract for the full electrical refit of the seismic vessel Polarcus Naila. The ultra-modern, 12 streamer 3D/4D seismic vessel will arrive in February 2014 at the Damen-owned yard Shipdock Amsterdam for a refit scheduled to last 35 days. The refit involves the replacement of the current thrusters. Schlumberger Led Consortium Wins Malaysia Offshore Survey
Malaysia has opened an area of its offshore waters to the multi-client seismic model for the first time. The move is a result of a new initiative by Petronas to stimulate offshore E&P investment activity. “A consortium comprising of PGS, TGS and Schlumberger WesternGeco, the industry’s three largest multi-client companies, have successfully won the tender for the rights to undertake a multi-client seismic program offshore Sabah,” TGS, a Norwegian seismic company said. Offshore Sabah sits in an active fold-and-thrust province that hosts a number of proven hydrocarbon accumulations.
Drydocks World Dubai Delivers Polarcus Nadia
Drydocks World - Dubai has delivered the Polarcus Nadia, the most advanced seismic vessel built at the yard to date. The vessel, first of a series of four vessels to be built at Drydocks World – Dubai (DDW-D), is to be part of the Polarcus fleet, the Dubai-based marine geophysical company specialising in towed streamer marine data acquisition across the world. The double-hulled, 289.7 ft long Polarcus Nadia is an advanced 3D seismic vessel. The Dubai yard’s all-inclusive expertise was utilized in full force to make the purpose-built vessel meet the stringent demands of offshore seismic operators. The vessel is capable of towing up to 12 steamers. Polarcus Nadia is of Ulstein SX 124 design and incorporates a number of innovative features.
Rigdon Marine Signs Long-Term Contract
Larry Rigdon, President and CEO of Rigdon Marine, announced the signing of a long-term contract to provide offshore vessel services in the Gulf of Mexico to Terra Seismic Services, a Norwegian oil and gas seismic company. Terra Seismic Services is the first seismic services company to deploy a unique Four Component (4C) Ocean Bottom Cable (OBC) data acquisition system for the offshore environment. The system also offers improved and automated in-sea systems handling techniques. These new systems allow Terra Seismic Services to provide oil and gas companies enhanced state-of-the-art seismic data more cost effectively. Terra Seismic Services will employ the ground breaking “VectorSeis Ocean” recording and communication technology system as part of its advanced data acquisition methods.
Multiclient Seismic Data Offshore Mozambique Available from Schlumberger
Schlumberger announced today the availability of its multiclient seismic survey offshore Mozambique. The Schlumberger multiclient seismic data offered in collaboration with the National Petroleum Institute of Mozambique (INP) includes reprocessed 2D lines and newly acquired seismic data, and provides detailed imaging of the subsurface. “The recent discoveries and regional appraisals in the area indicate significant frontier exploration potential,” said Maurice Nessim, president, PetroTechnical Services, Schlumberger.
Polarcus Gets West Africa Contract
Polarcus Limited has announced it has received a letter of intent for a 3D marine seismic project in West Africa. The client was not disclosed by the Dubai-based seismic vessel operator, who will utilise its RightBAND technique for the broadband data acquisition. The project is of two weeks duration and will form part of the Company's West African campaign during Q4 2015. The new contract is the company’s fourth announced this month with new projects won in Brazil, Australia and Myanmar. ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE:IO) announced that its seismic imaging subsidiary, GX Technology (GXT), has signed an agreement with The Polarcus Group of Companies (Polarcus) for the provision of seismic data processing services. This agreement includes onboard quality control (QC), onboard processing, and land-based data processing (DP) services. Rolls-Royce Contract for Chinese Research Vessel
Rolls-Royce won a $32.2m order from Chinese conglomerate Sinopec to design and equip a specialist seismic research vessel. When operational it will carry out detailed surveys of the seabed to identify oil and gas reserves. The contract includes efficient power and propulsion systems and a range of advanced automated handling systems for seismic equipment. Two New Modern Seismic Vessels for CGGVeritas in 2010
CGGVeritas and Eidesvik Offshore ASA have entered into an agreement for the supply of two large seismic vessels to be newly built, with a total contract value of approximately $420m. The two vessels will be of an extremely advanced specification, incorporating many unique features, based on the most recent X-BOWdesign of Ulstein Design AS, and will be delivered in 2010 under 12-year time charter agreements. Ice-class Seismic Vessel Order for Kleven
Kleven has signed a contract with GC Rieber Shipping for the building of an advanced seismic vessel. The vessel is of type ST 324 XT from Skipsteknisk, and is to be delivered from Myklebust Verft in March 2015. Contract value is around 700 million NOK and there is an option for a second vessel. The advanced seismic vessel will meet ice class ICE 1A*, providing a solid base for operations in Arctic areas. Major Seabed Seismic R&D Collaboration
SpiceRack: CGGVeritas & Saudi Aramco join in major R&D collaboration to develop seabed seismic acquisition. Five months after CGGVeritas and Saudi Aramco signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaborative research and the development of geophysical acquisition, processing, analysis and interpretation technologies, the two companies have entered into a collaboration to conduct a major joint R&D project, known as SpiceRack, intended to herald a new innovative solution for seabed seismic acquisition. Under the terms of the SpiceRack project, CGGVeritas and Saudi Aramco will work in close partnership to develop, manufacture, and commercialize an innovative robotized solution for seabed seismic acquisition.
Rolls-Royce Seismic Research Vessel Delivered
Seismic Research Vessel FA XIAN6, a Rolls-RoyceUT 830 CD design for Shanghai Offshore Petroleum Bureau, (Sinopec), is the first of its type to be built in China. It is equipped with a package of Rolls-Royce power and propulsion systems as well as advanced automated handling systems for deploying the seismic equipment. Built by Shanghai Shipyard Co., FA XIAN6 has been delivered to Shanghai Offshore Petroleum Bureau, which is a part of the Chinese conglomerate Sinopec, expanding its current fleet of seismic and geophysical exploration survey vessels.

Shell technology creates sharper pictures of underground rock formations to find new oil and gas fields more cost effectively. Shell has found a way to use tiny motion sensors – like those used in modern everyday gadgets – to create sharper pictures of underground rock formations. Geophysicists map underground rock structures by sending seismic waves – essentially sound – through the ground. Sensors record the seismic waves and computers process the recordings to create images of the rock layers. But these seismic images may not be sharp enough to pick up important details. As a result, multi-million dollar exploration wells sometimes end up as dry holes.
