Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA announces its plan to change its name to Philly Shipyard ASA, pending an upcoming shareholder vote at an extraordinary general meeting expected to take place in October 2015. Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI) will likewise change its name to Philly Shipyard, Inc. "Changing our name to Philly Shipyard more accurately reflects the shipyard we have become in recent years," remarked Steinar Nerbovik, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard's President and CEO. "We have delivered on our promises and stand firmly on our own two feet as a company.

Pemamek Wins Contract

Pemamek Oy Ltd was recently awarded a contract of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, construction and delivery of a micro panel line. Commissioning in early 2013, the new modern micro panel line replaces the existing one. This new line will increase the shipyard’s productivity and therefore improve Aker Philadelphia Shipyards positioning at the market. Additionally, Pemamek Ltd contracted a yearly maintenance contract for the equipment and software for fully support in periodical maintenance and so enabling continuous production.

Aker Philadelphia Appoints New CFO

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA has appointed Jan Ivar Nielsen as Chief Financial Officer effective September 2015. Since 2009, Nielsen has held the position of CFO of VARD Holdings, a publicly listed global designer and builder of offshore and specialized vessels with 10 facilities across Europe, Asia and South America. From the period 2002 to 2005, Nielsen was CFO of the shipyard in Philadelphia. In 2005, Nielsen was involved in the formation of Aker American Shipping Company, the former parent of both Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and American Shipping Company.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI), the sole operating subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA, announced today that a new four year collective bargaining agreement has been ratified by the Philadelphia Metal Trades Council (PMTC). The PMTC is the exclusive bargaining representative for production and maintenance employees at APSI and consists of ten unions. Mike Giantomaso, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Vice President of Human Resources remarked, "We are pleased to have successfully ratified this agreement and are very proud to continue our partnership with the PMTC.

New Union Agreement for Aker Philadelphia Shipyard

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and the Philadelphia Metal Trades Council aannounced that a new collective bargaining agreement between the union and the shipyard has been ratified by the Philadelphia Metal Trades membership. The new agreement comes after months of determined negotiations between the yard and union leadership and will be effective through January 31, 2011. On the new agreement Dave Meehan, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard President and CEO, remarked, "Our union employees are the backbone of our shipyard, and their hard work and dedication to their crafts are evidenced in the ships we build. This agreement speaks to the commitment of both parties to work together building on our accomplishments to date and looking to the future.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard announces new CEO

Kristian Røkke has been appointed President and CEO of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA (AKPS). He replaces Jim Miller who has been appointed Executive Vice President of Aker Contractors’ US Onshore Engineering & Construction business and member of Aker Contractors’ new Executive Management Team. Mr. Miller is also nominated for the position as Chairman of the Board at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard. Kristian Røkke will take over as President and CEO of the Yard effective April 5, 2011. Mr. Røkke is currently the Senior Vice President of Operations at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and has been in key operating positions at the facility for the last 4 years.

Aker Philly Shipyard Build Methodologies Confirmed in Court Decision

In a decision filed by the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has upheld the United States Coast Guard interpretation of the Jones Act as it relates to the modern building methods employed by Aker Philadelphia Shipyard. The decision rejected a lawsuit filed by the Metal Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, 10th Tanker

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (Oslo:AKPS), a leading U.S. commercial shipyard, cut steel on Hull 014, the tenth product tanker in the series of twelve to be built for American Shipping Company (Oslo:AMSC). Production of this vessel begins a few days after the successful delivery of Hull 010, the Overseas Boston. A small ceremony was held this afternoon to commence production and was attended by representatives of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, OSG, the Philadelphia Metal Trades Council and Philabundance. Last week, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and the Philadelphia Metal Trades Council held a yard wide food drive to help support Philabundance in its mission to be the largest hunger relief organization in the region.

Aker Shipyard Provides Clarification on Crane Incident

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI), the wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA (AKPS) has released an update regarding an incident that occurred yesterday at its facility. According to Aker, numerous factually incorrect news reports have emerged, and this release was intended to clarify certain points. Aker reported that at approximately 6:50am, maintenance was being performed on the shipyard’s gantry crane when an electrical fault occurred. Following protocol, NAVSES and the Philadelphia Fire Department responded.

Hyundai Mipo Expands Navy Yard contract

A South Korean shipbuilder said that it will be building additional tankers and container ships at the old Philadelphia Navy Yard. The parent of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. said its expanded deal with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. covers an additional six tankers as well as exclusive rights for container ships. Under a 2004 deal, Hyundai Mipo has been providing design and procurement services for a series of 10 tankers currently under construction in Philadelphia. Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (Oslo: AKPS) held a ceremonial keel laying on March 15 for Ship 015, the 11th product tanker being built at the yard. This vessel will be sold to OSG America after delivery from Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and will have shuttle tanker features installed for use in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (Oslo: AKPS), a U.S. commercial shipyard, delivered to American Shipping Company (Oslo: AMSC) its tenth Veteran Class MT-46 product tanker. The 46,000 dwt vessel, named the Overseas Anacortes, will leave the shipyard in the coming days under the operation of OSG America to transport petroleum products for Tesoro. This vessel is the fourth vessel planned to be utilized by Tesoro. The ship will leave Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and join its sister ships in transporting petroleum products on the West Coast.

OSG to Build More Tankers

Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. (OSG), signed an agreement in principle pursuant to which Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, a subsidiary of Aker American Shipping ASA, will build up to six additional Veteran Class MT-46 Jones Act Product Tankers (three fixed plus three options). Corporation, OSG will bareboat charter the vessels for initial terms of 10 to 15 years. The agreement in principle is subject to, among other conditions, approval by the Boards of Directors of OSG and Aker American Shipping, preparation and agreement of final documentation and relevant government approvals. between OSG and BP for one more of the 46,000 dwt Jones Act commercial product tankers being built at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard.

U.S. Shipyard Delivers Tankship to Crowley

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard delivers its first Veteran-class MT-46 product tanker to Crowley Maritime Corp. This is the thirteenth product tanker that the shipyard has completed and the seventeenth vessel overall. The product tankers are 600 feet long and have a cargo capacity of 46,000 dwt. The ship is named the Pennsylvania and is the first vessel that AKPS has delivered to Crowley. As stated in AKPS’s release on 21 August, 2012, Crowley will also take delivery of the next product tanker, Hull 018, when it is completed in February 2013.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Starts on Second Aframax Tankship

Construction starts on the second of two Aframax tankers for SeaRiver Maritime, Inc., Exxon Mobil Corporation’s U.S. marine affiliate. The construction of the two tankers, valued at $400 million, will create more than 1,000 jobs. A small ceremony was held in the shipyard’s Fabrication Shop to commence cutting on the ship’s first steel plate. These plates will become part of the double hull of the tanker that protects the cargo tanks. When completed in 2014, the vessels will be 820 feet long and be capable of carrying 115,000 tons of crude oil. The tankers are intended to be used to transport Alaskan North Slope crude oil from Prince William Sound to the U.S. West Coast.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (Oslo: AKPS), a U.S. commercial shipyard, delivered its ninth Veteran Class MT-46 product tanker May 14 to American Shipping Company (Oslo: AMSC). The 46,000 dwt vessel, named the Overseas Martinez, will leave the shipyard in the coming days under the operation of OSG America to transport petroleum products for Tesoro. Aker Philadelphia has three other vessels currently under construction as part of its historical build program. All are scheduled to be delivered through spring 2011.

Union Fights Aker Over Foreign Parts

The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that the Department of Homeland Security has rejected an AFL-CIO complaint about use of foreign-made parts at the Philadelphia shipyard, prompting the union to vow a political fight over U.S. shipbuilding protections. The Metal Trades Department of the AFL-CIO asked the Coast Guard, part of Homeland Security, in mid-May to review Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc.'s construction of 10 tankers based on a design bought from South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and using components procured through Hyundai. The union claimed that Aker was violating the Jones Act, a law intended to protect U.S. shipbuilding by allowing only U.S.-made ships to be certified to ply U.S. ports.
