Fukushima Radioactivity In Tuna off Oregon, Washington
A sample of albacore tuna caught off the shores of Oregon and Washington state have small levels of radioactivity from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, researchers said on Tuesday. But authors of the Oregon State University study say the levels are so small you would have to consume more than 700,000 pounds of the fish with the highest radioactive level to match the amount of radiation the average person is annually exposed to in everyday life through cosmic rays, the air, the ground, X-rays and other sources.

Coast Guard Sector Guam has levied fines against the South Pacific Tuna Corporation for eight separate violations of Title 46 United States Code, Section 8304 for using unlicensed foreign personnel to illegally fill the roles of chief mate and chief engineer on U.S. flagged vessels. Crewmembers from Sector Guam determined in March 2012 that the violations had taken place on five of the company’s 14 purse seine vessels while conducting dockside vessel safety examinations in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. The World Trade Organization's Appellate Body ruled against the United States on Friday in a dispute with Mexico over tuna labelling, upholding an earlier ruling issued in April that found U.S. rules discriminated against Mexico. "The Appellate Body concludes that the United States has not brought its dolphin-safe labelling regime for tuna products into conformity with the recommendations and rulings of the (WTO's dispute settlement body)," the WTO's appeals judges said at the end of their 144-page ruling on the case.

On Saturday, September 7 , the launching of Izaro was held at the premises of Zamakona Yards in Bilbao. This vessel is a tuna freezer of 1,900 m3 and belongs to the Echebastar Group. Zamakona Delivers Tuna Vessel to Echebastar
The Echebaster Group received its new tuna-freezer vessel last Saturday from Zamakona Yards after its inauguration at the Maritime Cruise Station at Getxo, Port of Bilbao. The new tuna vessel has a length of almost 90 meters and a capacity of 1,900 m3 of fish in its 20 freezers with accommodation for 42 crew aboard and a top speed of 18.2 knots. This Saturday, the inauguration of the first of a series of three tuna-freezer vessels of similar characteristics that Zamakona Yards will deliver to the Bermean company by next year.
NASSCO Christens Yard Tug Blue Fin
U.S. shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has taken delivery of a new tug, Blue Fin, to support its waterfront activities. The new tug, built by Marine Group Boat Works in National City, Calif., was christened July 8 at a ceremony at NASSCO’s shipyard in Barrio Logan in San Diego. Bonnie Fanelli, the wife of 43-year NASSCO employee and assistant dockmaster Tom Fanelli, christened the tug. The name Blue Fin was selected for the new tug after NASSCO invited local K-8 students to participate in a vessel naming contest.
Zamakona Launches Tuna Freezer Vessel
Tuna freezer vessel Ljubica was launched at Zamakona Yards shipyard in Bilbao on June 16 for Ecuadoran shipowner Pesquera Miriam S.A. The ship has been designed and developed by the technical shipping office CINTRANAVAL - DEFCAR SL and has a 1,999 m3 fish capacity in its tanks, 90 meters length and 18 knots speed. The Ljubica is designed for tuna fishing trough the fences system in fishing grounds located at the Pacific Ocean. Its delivery is planned for autumn 2014.

The propulsion units of tuna seiners of the latest generation are characterized by high cruising speeds of up to 20 knots and highly turbocharged diesel engines with critical response characteristics during stop maneuvers. Spanish tuna vessel opts for fuel-efficient propulsion package. Based in Spain, the Pevasa Group recently ordered a complete propulsion system from MAN Diesel and Turbo for a new tuna vessel. The system is unique in that it comprises a package of three high-efficiency products, including a modern, medium-speed MAN 8L32/44CR engine with common-rail (CR) technology, a Renk RSVL-950 gear unit, and an innovative MAN Alpha VBS1100 CP propeller with Kappel propeller blade designs and rudder bulb.

Salazar Appointed as Chairman of the Board for Panama Canal Authority
President Mireya Moscoso of Panama made a final appointment for the post of Minister of State for Canal Affairs. Jerry Salazar, former director of the Panama Maritime Authority, has been appointed to the said position. Since the Canal Minister chairs the ACP board, Salazar will assume the Chairmanship of the Panama Canal Board of Directors. Salazar replaces Ricardo Martinelli, who resigned as Canal Affairs Minister in January. Salazar brings experience in developing and executing maritime policy.
