Kalaat Beni-Abbes Delivered at Muggiano Shipyard

The delivery ceremony of new amphibious vessel for the Algerian Navy  was held today at the Muggiano shipyard (in La Spezia). The "Kalaat Beni-Abbes" (from the name of a place in the north of the country, which in Arabic means fort of the sons of Abbes), a vessel commissioned in 2011 by the Ministry of Defence of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria from Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a company controlled by Fincantieri in which Selex ES also holds an interest, will serve as the national Navy's new flagship. Navantia Ship Delivery To Algeria After Modernization

Navantia delivered the Algerian Navy ship BDSL 473 Kalaat Beni Rached, after the repair, modernization and life extension, repairs undertaken by Navantia Ferrol. The event, chaired by the representative of the Algerian Naval Forces, will be formalized with the signing of the minutes of delivery, which will be signed by the Director of Repairs Ferrol Miguel Rodríguez Lorenzo and the President of the CER (Commission of Essais et de Recette ). The work on board to complete customer satisfaction in terms of quality and deadlines, began in November 2012, on the arrival of the ship and have made a significant workload for nearly 200 workers in Ferrol, involving also other production units as Systems and Motor

Algeria Gives Russian Shipyard Contract to Modernize Warships

Russia’s Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg has signed a contract on the overhaul of two warships for the Algerian navy, the company’s press service said on Thursday. The Russian shipbuilder will modernize a Nanuchka II class corvette and a Koni II class frigate, which have been in service with the Algerian navy since the 1980s. “The contract has been signed in the framework of an agreement between [Russian state-run arms exporter] Rosoboronexport and the Algerian Defense Ministry,” the company said in a statement.

Nassau Medical Team Trains with Allies

Military medical professionals from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia visited USS Nassau (LHA 4) April 11 for a series of professional exchanges and demonstrations as part of the ongoing Exercise Phoenix Express. Phoenix Express is one of a series of North African exercises held annually in the Naval Forces Europe-Sixth Fleet (CNE-C6F) area of operations and directly supports its strategic priority of improving maritime security. “Until this exercise, I didn’t know about some of the capabilities of the Algerian Navy,” said Nassau Senior Medical Officer Capt. David Lasseter. Nassau medical staff and Fleet Surgical Team (FST) 2 exchanged medical knowledge, capabilities, and procedures with the teams from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
