Kirby Corp. to Acquire Allied Transportation

Kirby Corporation agrees to purchase assets of Allied Transportation Company, a subsidiary of Allied Marine Industries, & two affiliated companies. Kirby Corporation, based in Houston, Texas, is the nation's largest domestic tank barge operator, transporting bulk liquid products throughout the Mississippi River System, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, coastwise along all three United States coasts and in Alaska and Hawaii. Allied is an operator of offshore barges and tugboats participating in the coastal transportation of petrochemicals, as well as dry sugar products, in the Northeast, Atlantic and Gulf Coast regions of the United States. Customers include major petrochemical companies, most of which are current Kirby customers for inland tank barge services.

News: Bay Shipbuilding Picks ATB Design

Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp.'s new Atlantic III ATB ocean tugboat design was selected by Bay Shipbuilding Corp., a unit of Manitowoc Corp., for construction as the powered portion of a new articulated tug barge (ATB) the yard will build for Penn Maritime, of Stamford, Conn. The 140,000 bbl capacity heated ocean tank barge, will be handled by the latest tug design from Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., a long established firm whose focus is ATB design. The new tug, equipped with the Intercon connection system, measures 123 x 38-ft., and is powered by twin EMD 12-710G main engines, for a total of 6,000 bhp. The tug will also be built to fit the notches of Penn's other Intercon ATB barges. Robert P.

Alabama Shipyard Signs Tug/Barge Contract

Alabama Shipyard has signed a contract to build an articulated tug and barge (ATB) vessel for Allied Transportation Company of Norfolk, Va. "This is our third major contract award during the last four months of 2000," noted Alabama Shipyard president Dick Wells. "We have several pending contracts that will help us create a stable workforce here in Mobile," Wells stated. Alabama Shipyard designed the 129,000-bbl, 450-ft. barge in compliance with the OPA 90, which requires vessels to have a double-hull in order to provide greater safeguards to the marine environment. OPA 90 requires most large coastal barges operating in the petroleum and chemical trade to have double hulls by 2005.

Coast Guard Should Rethink Salvage and Firefighting Proposal, AWO Says

The Coast Guard's May 10 proposal to add costly and prescriptive salvage and firefighting provisions to its tank vessel response plan regulations should be overhauled in favor of a simpler and more practical approach, AWO testified at a July 17 public meeting in Philadelphia, Pa. The need for the proposed rule has not been demonstrated. The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 is working well, both on the prevention and the response fronts. Academy of Sciences have acknowledged that spill response has been timely and effective since the passage of OPA 90. "Quite simply, the Coast Guard has failed to demonstrate that this costly proposal is necessary to achieve the pollution prevention objectives of OPA 90," Carpenter said.

USS Hopper Arrives in 7th Fleet

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Hopper (DDG 70) entered the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations Jan. Hopper will conduct evolutions involving theater security cooperation, building partner capacity and performing routine operations within the area. Hopper is a multi-mission ship with anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare surface combatants capabilities; designed to operate independently or with a surface action group or strike group.

Coast Guard Seizes 12,000 Pounds of Cocaine

The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast returned home to Astoria, Oregon in late December after making several drug busts while on patrol in international waters off the coasts of Mexico and Central America. Over the course of a 50-day counterdrug patrol in the Eastern Pacific, Steadfast crewmembers interdicted five separate vessels engaged in suspected illegal drug smuggling. During the patrol crewmembers detected and boarded a low profile vessel, a custom fabricated boat specifically built to evade law enforcement.

Cutrona, Former Director of NASSTRAC, Passes

Joseph F. H. Cutrona, former executive director of NASSTRAC (the National Shippers Strategic Transportation Council) from 1978-1998, died Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2010 at his home in Naples, Fla. NASSTRAC provides education, advocacy, connections and solutions for professionals involved in all areas of transportation, ranging from full truckload and LTL to containerization and global logistics. Prior to joining the management team of NASSTRAC, Cutrona attended West Point and became a career Army officer serving in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, where he was the Chief Information Officer before retiring as a Brigadier General.

MARAD Awards $3.1M Contract to New Bay Area Ship Recycler

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced that it has awarded two contracts for a total of $3.1m to Allied Defense Recycling of Petaluma, Calif., to clean and recycle two Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet ships, the SS Solon Turman and the SS President. The two ships are scheduled to be towed from Suisun Bay to the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard facility in for recycling in December. “The Obama Administration is running full-speed ahead in its commitment to cleaning up the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. In October 2009, the Obama Administration called for expedited cleanup of the fleet site and improved protection of the unique marine environment and surrounding bayside communities…

U.S. Transportation Secretary Honors U.S. Merchant Marine on National Maritime Day

As part of the celebration of National Maritime Day, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today honored the men and women of the U.S. merchant marine who risk their lives on wartime seas. This year’s ceremony at Navy Memorial Auditorium paid special tribute to the action of mariners during World War II. Following the presentation of the colors and a moment of silence, Secretary Mineta spoke of WWII merchant mariners who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. "They traveled unarmed, often into dangerous waters, to support our Armed Forces overseas. Merchant mariners crewed the Liberty ships, the Victory ships, and thousands of other ships that carried troops and many tons of materiel for the Allied cause in World War II. Nearly 215,000 people served in the U.S.

Kirby Announces 4Q & 2012 Year Financials

Kirby Corporation today announced net earnings attributable to Kirby for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2012 of $57.9 million, or $1.03 per share, compared with $56.2 million, or $1.00 per share, for the 2011 fourth quarter. Revenues for the 2012 fourth quarter were $512.6 million compared with $550.1 million for the 2011 fourth quarter. Joe Pyne, Kirby's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "Our fourth quarter results benefited from higher demand and favorable pricing in our coastal marine transportation markets, as well as a contribution from our two fourth quarter coastal acquisitions. We were also able to manage through the Mississippi River System's low water issues and Hurricane Sandy with only an estimated $.02 to $.03 per share negative impact.

USS Cole (DDG 67) will enter the Black Sea, Feb. 8, 2015, to promote peace and stability in the region. Cole’s presence in the Black Sea will serve to reaffirm the U.S. dedication to commitment towards strengthening the partnerships and joint operational capabilities amongst U.S., NATO and regional Black Sea partners. “The United States remains fully committed to our NATO Allies and regional partners throughout Europe. We maintain our ships and submarines deployed across the Mediterranean, north Atlantic and into the Black Sea.

Allied Systems Cranes for CG Icebreakers

On March 27, the U.S. Coast Guard awarded Allied Systems Company a $10m dollar contract to provide deck cranes and auxiliary hydraulic power units for the USCG icebreakers Polar Star (WAGB-10) and Polar Sea (WAGB-11). This contract award represents part of a retrofit and reactivation of these older Coast Guard icebreakers to meet the needs of Homeland Security and the scientific community. Allied Marine Crane Outfits R/V Neil Armstrong

The U.S. Navy’s research vessel Neil Armstrong (AGOR-27), scheduled for completion this year, is equipped with a modern array of oceanographic research equipment. To handle this equipment, Allied Marine Crane, a division of Allied Systems, Co., was chosen to design and manufacture two cranes, one A-frame, one davit, two handling systems and two hydraulic power units. Allied Marine Crane equipment was specified based on their history with research equipment handling, their proven design and build capabilities, and strong working relationship with marine winch supplier Markey Machinery.

Innovative A-Frame Crane for RV Sikuliaq

Recently installed aboard the R/V Sikuliaq was Allied Marine Crane’s innovatively redesigned A-Frame crane, which aims to improve the safety and capability of the marine research industry. Built at Allied Systems’ 250,000 sq. foot mfg. facility in Sherwood, Ore., the A-Frame was installed aboard 261-foot oceanographic research ship at the Bay Ship & Yacht Co. in Alameda, Calif. He succeeds James Henry, Chairman and President of the Transportation Institute. Henry will now serve as AMP’s Vice Chairman. Canadian Tugboat Industry Conference Judged a Success

The 20th BC Tugboat Industry Conference was held May 23-25, 2013 in Victoria, BC. According to BC Shipping News, in addition to a retrospective of the industry – including presentations from Allan Fowlis (retired, Seaspan) who gave personal insights into the industry in its characters, and Leo Stradiotti (North Arm Transportation) who presented a pictoral of BC tugs from old to new – speakers such as Robert G.Allan (Robert Allan Ltd.), Fred Denning (BC Coast Pilots Ltd.), Malcolm McLaren (Allied Shipbuilders) and Frans Tjallingii (SMIT Marine Canada) each provided a unique perspective on aspects of the industry from technological developments to the relationship to pilots to towage and salvage in the international arena.

Domestic Maritime Industry Salute USCG

U.S.-flag vessel operators and allied industries engaged in domestic waterborne commerce today recognized the vital role the U.S. Coast Guard plays in keeping America’s waters safe and secure. The salute comes on the 221st anniversary of the legislation that established the Revenue Cutter Service, the forerunner of today’s U.S. Coast Guard. “The U.S. Coast Guard is the most underappreciated federal agency,” said James Henry, President of the Transportation Institute, and Chairman of the Board of American Maritime Partnership. “On any given day, these men and women conduct more than 100 search and rescue missions, save 10 lives, board more than 140 large vessels for port safety checks, and service 135 aids to navigation. And that’s just some of the Coast Guard’s missions.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) entered U.S. 6th Fleet’s area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe March 3, 2015. While on deployment, Jason Dunham will interact with allied and partner nations, highlighting the U.S. commitment and emphasis of building strong partnerships and improving warfighting capability. It will also conduct several port visits and participate in a number of exercises while in U.S. 6th Fleet’s area of operation. The U.S. remains committed to maintaining a persistent presence in Europe.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) participated in a passing exercise (PASSEX) with ships from Turkey and Romania Dec. 15, 2015. The PASSEX was conducted in order to improve maritime capabilities between the U.S. and Black Sea naval forces. The participating nations joined in advanced ship maneuvering and anti-submarine training exercises. The U.S. Navy routinely operates ships in the Black Sea consistent with international law.
