Ampol Completes Unique Skimmer Vessels

American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL), completed the acquisition and reconstruction of a newly restored shallow water skimmer vessel. Unique in its design and engineering, the vessel was altered to incorporate a dual outboard system and an independent hydraulic engine to a belt driven hydraulic system. Vessel construction began with the hull. Subsequently, a conveyer assembly, hydraulic system and an outboard engine system were added to the skimmer. This specific skimmer took six months to complete and is now response ready. A test run was conducted on Jan.

AMPOL Wins Coast Guard Contract

NEW IBERIA, La. (March 14, 2011) – The Oil Stop Division of the American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL), the industry leader in oil spill response and total environmental solutions, has been granted a Phase 2 contract for development and testing of its OSBORS (Oil Stop Bottom Oil Recovery System) submerged oil recovery system by the United States Coast Guard Research and Development Branch. “Working with the United States Coast Guard Research and Development Branch is a great honor,” said CEO Kirk Headley.

Ampol Performs Cleanup on Platform Recovery Project

American Pollution Control Corp. Ampol Completes Oil Recovery Equipment Testing

Oil Stop Division of American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL) completed phase two of its contract with the US Coast Guard Research and Development Center for the testing of Submerged Oil Recovery Equipment. The contract was completed in November after successfully executing a variety of tests at the OHMSETT facility in Leonardo, New Jersey. The OHMSETT facility allows industry professionals to work with real oil in simulated environments. As a result of testing, adaptations were made to AMPOL’s Oil Stop Bottom Oil Recovery System (OSBORS).

AMPOL Completes Downed Platform Project

American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL), a leading oil spill response and total environmental solutions provider, has completed a platform recovery project in Amelia, La., announced CEO Kirk Headley. From planning to implementation, the total project took approximately five years and included lifting the platform and remediating hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulfide on the recovered platform that had been trapped beneath 100 feet of mud. The cleaning and remediation processes were completed by air from man liftsand subsequently the platform was deemed environmentally safe for recycling.

Lott and Bergeron Join AMPOL

American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL), an oil spill response and environmental solutions provider, has named Kevin Bergeron and Jeremy Lott Insulation Specialists, announced CEO Kirk Headley. Bergeron and Lott will both be based out of AMPOL’s New Iberia facility. Their responsibilities will include insulation preparation, installation and service. Combined, the two men bring more than 42 years of experience to AMPOL. Bergeron has project management experience with insulation, asbestos abatement, lead abatement, coatings, steam tracing and refractory unit jobs.

EDF, EPA in Action to Counter Shipping Pollution

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) announced its support for the request by the U.S. government to protect against global shipping pollution generated by large ocean-going ships. During a noon news conference on March 30, at Port Newark, New Jersey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson announced that the U.S. government applied to designate U.S. coastal waters as "Emission Control Areas" under international law. An Emission Control Area, or ECA, would provide the strongest clean air standards available under international law. The EDF said that it would dramatically improve fuel quality and reduce smog-forming oxides of nitrogen for all ocean-going ships in the exclusive economic zone of the United States…

EPA Guidance on Fuel Availability Off N. America

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released interim guidance for ship owners and operators clarifying how the U.S. government will implement fuel availability provisions when ships are unable to obtain fuel that meets standards protecting against sulfur pollution along the coast. Sulfur pollution has been linked to respiratory illnesses, particularly in at-risk populations including children, the elderly, and asthmatics. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has officially designated waters off of the coast of North America, known as the North American Emission Control Area (North American ECA), as areas where stringent international pollution standards apply for ships, including fuel sulfur limits.

Nexans Acquires BE CableCon

French company Nexans has acquired a controlling interest in Denmark-based BE CableCon, which supplies cable kits to wind turbine companies. The acquisition is part of Nexans’ strategy aimed at reinforcing the Group’s portfolio of activities and accelerating its growth in the renewable energy segment. The acquisition is an illustration of the recently-announced “Paced for Growth” strategy aimed at developing Nexans’ business beyond manufacturing cables to provide customers with complete, fully-integrated cable services.

Located in Carmi and Fairfield, Illinois and Cocoa, Florida, Elastec manufactures water pollution control products specializing in oil spill recovery equipment. Established in 1990 with the invention of the ELASTEC Drum Skimmer, the U.S. Clean Water act inspired Elastec to expand its product line to include floating booms, turbidity curtains, vacuum systems, work boats and portable incinerators. Elastec’s new Omni Cat is a waterway maintenance catamaran designed to help municipalities comply with nonpoint source pollution.

Canada Unveils New Arctic Shipping Safety Regulations

Canada's Arctic is a vast and diverse region that is an integral part of this country. Marine transportation in the Arctic connects Canada to other countries and provides an essential lifeline for northern communities. To uphold the Government of Canada's high standards for marine shipping in the north, Transport Canada has introduced new Arctic Shipping Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations. The regulations incorporate the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (the Polar Code) into Canada's domestic legislation.

IMO Reminder on North American ECA Controls

North American emission control area comes into effect on 1 August 2012. The North American Emission Control Area (ECA), under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), comes into effect from 1 August 2012, bringing in stricter controls on emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter for ships trading off the coasts of Canada, the United States and the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. Amendments to MARPOL Annex VI (Regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships) to establish the North American ECA entered into force on 1 August 2011, with a 12-month period before becoming effective.

EPA and Coast Guard Reach Pollution Control Agreement with Carnival

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Coast Guard have reached an agreement in principle with Carnival Corporation to develop advanced emission control technology to be used in waters surrounding U.S. coasts. Under the agreement, Carnival will develop and deploy a new exhaust gas cleaning system on up to 32 ships over the next three years to be used in Emission Control Areas (ECA’s). The North American and U.S. Caribbean ECA’s create a buffer zone around U.S. and Canadian coasts where ships must reduce harmful air pollution emissions.

Offshore Vessels LLC to Pay $2.1M in Penalties

A Louisiana ship-operating company was sentenced in U.S. District Court in New Orleans on charges related to the illegal discharge of oil into the oceans, the Justice Department announced. Offshore Vessels LLC (OSV) was sentenced to pay a criminal fine of $1,750,000 and remit a payment of $350,000 as community service to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. The community service funds are to be used to study polar water pollution and protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems in the Antarctic region. OSV also will serve a period of probation for three years, during which it will be required to operate under an Environmental Compliance Plan.

OSRO Builds Chinese Pollution Control Consortium

In response to regulations enacted on March 1, 2010 on the Prevention and Control of Vessel-Induced Marine Environment Pollution, a Hong Kong based firm – OSRO China Ltd - has laid the foundation for a consortium of oil spill response contractors throughout China’s ports that fulfills China’s latest pollution control legislation. OSRO China was founded as a result of the Chinese Government’s recent approval of the Regulations of The People’s Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Vessel Induced Marine Environment Pollution. Of particular concern to ship owners was the requirement for pollution control agreements to be executed with local Oil Spill Response Organizations for ships carrying hazardous substances or of greater than 10,000 Gross Tonnes (GRT).

EPA has released a penalty policy for ECA violations. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a penalty policy for violations of the sulfur in fuel standard and related provisions for ships. The policy, which pursues violations of U.S. and international air pollution requirements by ships operating in the North American and U.S. Caribbean Sea Emissions Control Areas (ECA), applies to violations of new international standards for sulfur emissions from ships that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2015, and violations under the previous standards.

Elastec/American Marine Acquires Scandinavian Technology

Elastec/American Marine, headquartered in Carmi, IL, is pleased to announce the acquisition of the BoomVane technology, expanding its range in the manufacture of innovative pollution control equipment. Developed and patented by ORC of Sweden, the BoomVane is an aquatic paravane system that enables oil recovery and debris containment booms to be towed by a single vessel, as well as to deploy booms in rivers and tidal waters without boats or anchors. Elastec/American Marine is the largest manufacturer of oil spill recovery equipment in North America with global distribution in 145 countries.

EPA, USCG Extend Agreement with Royal Caribbean

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) authorized formal exemptions by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines that allow for the enlargement of the cruise line’s research program to develop and install exhaust gas scrubber systems on its cruise ships. Under the exemption, as articulated in MARPOL, Royal Caribbean will expand the program from six to 19 ships. This emission control technology will be used in waters surrounding U.S. coasts, known as Emission Control Areas (ECAs). The stricter rules come into effect under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution form ships (MARPOL) Annex VI (Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships), specifically under regulation 14, which covers emissions of Sulphur Oxides (SOx) and particulate matter from ships.
