Australian Government Highlights Nation’s Green Hydrogen Ambition
The Australian government has released its annual State of Hydrogen report, saying it reinforces that Australia has the foundations to become a global leader in green hydrogen. The report illustrates local industry is advancing hydrogen as a chemical feedstock and for export to generate electricity, but there’s an urgent need to speed up priority pilot projects and hydrogen hubs to compete internationally. In 2022, more than 100 Australian green hydrogen projects such as green ammonia and green methanol manufacturing were announced.
Australia’s LNG Export to Jump 60% in FY 2018-19
Australia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export earnings have been revised upwards for 2018-19 and are forecast to total $50.4 billion, an increase of nearly 60 per cent compared to 2017-18, overtaking metallurgical coal as Australia’s second largest resources and energy export.APPEA Chief Executive Dr Malcolm Roberts said the Resources and Energy Quarterly December 2018 data reinforced how critical LNG exports are to sustaining Australia’s economic growth.“Australia’s LNG projects will deliver decades of economic growth, jobs and exports. These national benefits aside, LNG exports have regional and global environmental benefits,” Dr Roberts said.“When used to replace coal, LNG cuts emissions.
Australia’s Oil and Gas Industry Calls for Competitive Tax Regime
Changes to the petroleum resource rent tax (PRRT) announced today by the Commonwealth must be assessed carefully by Australia’s oil and gas industry, said the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA).“Attracting investment in natural gas and oil production has never been more important for Australia,” said APPEA Chief Executive Dr Malcolm Roberts.“As Australia relies on foreign investment to develop our natural resources, it is vital that we have a stable, competitive tax regime.“Investors are always concerned when long-standing tax arrangements change. Since 1987, the PRRT has attracted investment to Australia while delivering $35 billion in revenue for the community.“The independent Callaghan Review confirmed the PRRT is an effective profits tax which delivers…
Oil and Gas Fuel Australian Exports
New Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data highlights the important contribution the oil and gas industry and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports are playing in supporting the ongoing growth of Australia’s economy.According to a press statement from Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA), oil and gas extraction value-added figures increased by 10.8 per cent in 2017-18 compared with 2016-17, to reach a record $30 billion.APPEA Chief Executive Dr Malcolm Roberts said: “The latest ABS data reaffirms how significant LNG exports are for sustaining Australia’s economic growth and prosperity – these exports are a vital source of strength for the economy.”Data released last month found LNG exports increased by 39 per cent in 2017-18…

Australia: The World’s Next LNG Leader
With a spate of big new projects coming on stream in the next few years, Australia is soon expected to become the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) says that Australia is on track to overtake Qatar to become the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in 2018. According to a new report from Accenture, Australia’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry is poised to become the world’s largest and most technologically advanced, contributing more than AUD$55 billion to Australia’s GDP in 2020. The country's largest LNG project, Gorgon, is expected to start up in the coming months, meaning seven major LNG projects will be operating this year.
Red Tape, Industrial Relations Could Stifle LNG Potential
Australia could develop the world’s most technologically advanced LNG industry, according to a report by Accenture. But if industry is to reach its potential and maximise its contribution to the national economy, it must first overcome some significant hurdles. The report — Ready or not? Creating a world-leading oil and gas industry in Australia — found that the Australian LNG industry must improve its international competitiveness, and governments must remove regulatory constraints and make the workplace relations system more flexible. With seven new projects entering production between 2015 and 2018, Australia’s LNG production is set to rise more than 90 per cent over the next five years and the LNG industry is tipped to contribute $55 billion to GDP by 2020, Accenture said.
Fracking Inquiry Puts Aussie Energy at Risk
The South Australian Liberal Party risks damaging investor and public confidence in the natural gas industry by moving to establish a Parliamentary inquiry into hydraulic fracturing – an industry practice that has been used safely in the State for many decades. APPEA’s Chief Operating Officer Western Region, Stedman Ellis, said the inquiry proposed by the Member for Mt Gambier had little basis in science. Mr Ellis said the South Australian Parliament needed to be wary that it did not provide a megaphone for people who want to undermine the industry and the investment and jobs it provided. “South Australia has consistently been ranked in international surveys as the most attractive Australian state for oil and gas investment,” Mr Ellis said.
BMT Oceanica Wins APPEA Study
Marine and coastal environment specialist, BMT Oceanica (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has been awarded the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association’s (APPEA) “Understanding the Risks of Unplanned Discharges” study. BMT Oceanica will be working with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to deliver this key project which will update current knowledge on the potential environmental impacts of unplanned releases of hydrocarbons and other chemicals into the marine environment. Phase one of the project is already underway and includes an international scientific review and the development of vulnerability assessment model that will help APPEA members enhance environmental and oil spill response plans.
Australian Watchdog NOPSEMA Gets new CEO
Australia’s oil and gas industry welcomes the appointment of Stuart Smith as the new Chief Executive Officer of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA). APPEA Chief Executive David Byers said: “Mr Smith brings to the position a strong background in industry regulation and a detailed understanding of the offshore oil and gas sector. “His appointment comes at a critical stage for the industry with a number of major projects under development. Mr Byers also paid tribute to outgoing NOPSEMA CEO Jane Cutler. “As the inaugural CEO of NOPSEMA, Ms Cutler worked closely with industry to develop the world’s first objectives-based environmental management regime,” he said.
