Navy Astronaut, Aquanaut, Scott Carpenter Laid to Rest
The funeral of the United States' fourth astronaut to fly in space, and the second to orbit the Earth, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Malcolm Scott Carpenter (retired), was held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colo., with full military honors. Carpenter, 88, died Oct. 10 at the Denver Hospice following complications from a stroke. He was, a dynamic pioneer of modern exploration, and earned the unique distinction of being the first human to penetrate both inner and outer space, thereby acquiring the dual titles of astronaut and aquanaut from NASA. He was commissioned in the U.S.
Adams Offshore Chooses Jeppesene
Jeppesen Marine announced that Adams Offshore has installed its Jeppesen Primar ECDIS Service on one of its dive support and offshore supply vessels, and is considering implementation of the solution across its fleet worldwide. Adams Offshore installed the Jeppesen Primar ECDIS Service on DPSV Adams Challenge in October. Kumar reports that since then the system has been operational and problem-free. Based upon this experience, Adams Offshore chose to equip both of DPSV Adams Challenge’s ECDIS systems with the Jeppesen Primar ECDIS Service, then to install the same service on its DPSV Adams Aquanaut offshore support vessel. Lerchbacker Leads Austal USA to the Top
When Austal Ltd. of Henderson, Western Australia, started looking last year for a CEO to lead its U.S.-based operations, the job description must have been daunting. They wanted a leader to take the helm of their newly built shipyard in Mobile, Ala., and turn it into a major contractor for both military and commercial vessels in the United States. Austal had recently entered the U.S. market for the first time, intent on competing with higher-profile rivals such as Incat/Bollinger, Derecktor Shipyards and Kvaerner. The company settled on Alan Lerchbacker, 50, an energetic former Navy Aquanaut with a business background, who took the position in February 2002. Lerchbacker had never heard of Austal until a headhunter contacted him.
