Presentation of "The 3-D Printed Vessel" at WFSA event
Vessels fashioned in a 3D printer, rather than a shipyard, will be the subject of a presentation at a Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) event. The virtual gathering, Innovations in Ferry Design and Vessel Construction, will be held in conjunction with the presentation of awards inWFSA’s Annual Student Design Competition, now in its ninth year, to be held on May 18, 2022.The keynote speaker, Dr. Habib Dagher, from the University of Maine, Advanced Structures and Composites Sector, will talk about the Center’s design and construction of the world’s largest 3D printed vessels.
Bhutan-Bangladesh Cargo Vessel Flagged Off

IRClass Signs MoU with Government of Assam

India, Bangladesh to Improve Inland Water Transportation
India and Bangladesh discussed various issues pertaining to the protocol arrangements and improvement of inland water transportation between the two countries in the 19th Standing Committee meeting under ‘Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade’ (PIWTT)held at New Delhi.The meeting was attended by high level delegations that included representatives of Ministries of Shipping, External Affairs, Home, Finance, DONER and Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and officials from Bangladesh belonging toMinistry of Shipping, Board of Revenue, DG (Shipping) and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).The two sides agreed to consider inclusion of Rupnarayan river (National Waterway-86) from Geonkhali to Kolaghatin West Bengal in the protocol route.
Indian Ports Register Positive Growth of 3.64%
The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.64% and together handled 499.41 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to December, 2017 as against 481.87 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. For the period from April- December 2017, Eight Ports (Kolkata (incl.Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Kandla) have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Cochin Port (17.27%), followed by Paradip (14.59%), Kolkata [incl. Haldia] (12.45%), New Mangalore (6.60%) and JNPT (5.94%). Cochin Port growth was mainly due to increase in traffic of POL (24.10%) and Containers (10.79%).
India to Flag Off Cargo Via NW 2 on River Brahmaputra
Nitin Gadkari, Indian Union Minister of Shipping will flag off the first movement of cement cargo through National Waterway (NW) 2 on River Brahmaputra in Assam today, under the Shipping Ministry’s flagship programme Sagarmala. He will also lay the foundation stone for bank protection work of Majuli Island tomorrow. Assam Chief minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, will also be present on the occasion. Marking a new milestone towards Government of India’s constant endeavors to promote economically more viable and environment friendly modes of transport in the country, two barges of 200 metric ton capacity each, will carry 400 tonnes of cement from the Inland Waterways Authority of India’s Pandu Port to Dhubri covering a distance of 255 kilometers.
Eighteen More Ferry Terminals in India
Eighteen ferry terminals are to be constructed in six Indian cities of Varanasi, Patna, Munger, Bhagalpur, Kolkata and Haldia on the National Waterways-I under the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP). The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has engaged a consultant for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the purpose. The consultants have been tasked to identify suitable locations for construction of the ferry terminals. IWAI holds Road Show in Guwahati
The Inland Waterways Authority of India organized a road show in association with the Ministry Of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in Guwahati last week to brainstorm on the major issues linked with developing the rivers of the North East as viable and sustainable means for cargo and passenger transportation. The seminar showcased the potential for cargo and passenger transportation on rivers Brahmaputra- NW- 2, Barak- NW- 16 and others. It also highlighted the enabling policies and infrastructure facilities available for safe handling and transportation of cargo on the navigable stretches where development works have commenced. Ro-Ro Terminal in Assam to Boost Traffic
The government of India said berthing operation of a vessel was carried out at the newly-constructed Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) terminal on the Brahmaputra in Assam. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) vessel will be deployed for Ro-Ro (roll-on, roll-off) service between Dhubri and Hatsingimari with a total waterway length of 29 km. Ro-Ro ships are vessels used for carrying wheeled cargo. IWAI's initiative opens a new gate of opportunities in the region by paving the way for drastically bridging the distance and cost for cargo and passenger movement between Dhubri and Hatsingimari which shares its border with Meghalaya. India to Develop Inland Waterways in Assam
River Brahmaputra from Dhubri to Sadiya was declared as National Waterway-2 (NW-2) in 1988. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for NW-2 was prepared by the Howe Engineering Project (India), Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) and Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited (WAPCOS). The interventions suggested in the DPR for development of fairway were bandalling, river training works and dredging. Besides suitable terminal locations were also identified. Accordingly, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has developed NW-2 for navigational purposes. At present NW-2 is fully operational with targeted depth of 2.5 m between Dhubri and Neamati; 2.0 m between Neamati and Dibrugarh and 1.5 m between Dibrugarh and Sadiya.
Indian Ferry Sinks in River Storm
Around 40 were dead and 160 missing when the overcrowded Indian ferry sank The Bangkok Post newspaper reports that around 40 people were dead and 160 missing after an overcrowded passenger ferry with 350 people aboard split into two and sank in a river in northeast India in a storm. "There were about 350 people on board when a storm split the steamer into two and so far we have recovered about 40 bodies and an estimated 150 people were either rescued or swam to safety,'' Assam police chief J.N. Choudhury said. Divers and rescue workers with rubber rafts scoured the Brahmaputra River early Tuesday in the search for survivors amid the floating debris, which was all that remained of the ferry.
