ABB Azipod Hits Mileston with PONANT

ABB Wins European Marine Engineering Award

Power and automation technology group ABB has won a European Marine Engineering Award, acknowledging the innovation behind the new Azipod D electric propulsion solution, launched in 2015. The 2016 Award for Auxiliary Machinery category honors auxiliary systems that demonstrate innovative and original development that improves a ship’s operational efficiency or reduces risk to personnel. Introduced in 2015, Azipod D propulsion was brought to market to allow a wider range of vessel types to benefit from the proven reliability and flexibility that have made Azipod the leading propulsion system across numerous ship types. ABB: Top Innovator for Marine Industry

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has been awarded the Innovation of the Year Award for the recently introduced Azipod D electric propulsion product at the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Innovation of the Year Award identifies pioneering technologies that push the boundaries and contribute to making electric and hybrid propulsion possible and viable. The winner was selected by an international jury consisting of 38 maritime journalists, industry experts and academics. ABB introduced the Azipod D in March 2015. ABB’s gearless Azipod propulsion system is already the preferred choice of cruise vessels, icebreakers, ice-going cargo vessels and offshore accommodation ships.

New Azipod Thruster Launched by ABB

Power and automation technology group ABB has introduced Azipod D, a new addition to its line of Azipod electric propulsion offering, allowing a wider range of vessel types to utilize the Azipod propulsion system. ABB’s gearless Azipod propulsion system is already used on cruise vessels, icebreakers, ice-going cargo vessels and offshore accommodation ships. With the Azipod D, shipping segments such as offshore drilling, construction and support vessels and ferries will have even more choices to make use of Azipod propulsion technology, ABB said.

Royal Caribbean, ABB Ink 15-year Service Contract

ABB has signed an extensive service agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCC) to increase cost efficiency and predictability of maintenance costs. The agreement spans 15 years and encompasses six vessels under RCC’s brands Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International. The financial value of the service agreement is in excess of $50 million. The agreement covers four Solstice and two Oasis class vessels and includes an option to extend the agreement to additional existing vessels, vessels that are currently under construction and future newbuilds.

ABB Azipod: Performance in Harsh Environs

ABB received an endorsement from two leading Russian customers on the performance of Azipod propulsion in the harshest environments in the marine sector. The impending fourth anniversary of the delivery of the ice breaking tug Polar Pevek has prompted the vessel’s technical management company OOO Polarus to offer its approval of Azipod propulsion technology as the “right choice” for extreme ice conditions. Delivered by Aker Langsten in June 2006, the 940 dwt Polar Pevek is owned through the GC Rieber Shipping/Primorsk Shipping Corp joint venture Polar Pevek Ltd, registered in Cyprus. The DnV Ice 10 IB offers 115 tons of bollard pull ahead, and 95 tons astern.
