UK’s Third River Class Offshore Patrol Vessel Named

The third of five new River class offshore patrol vessels being built for the U.K. Royal Navy, HMS Trent, was officially named during a ceremony at the BAE Systems shipyard in Glasgow on Tuesday. “This is another landmark moment for the River class offshore patrol vessel program and an important day that honors the traditions of the Royal Navy,” said Iain Stevenson, Managing Director of BAE Systems Naval Ships. “Today is made even more special as we are able to see the full scale of Trent as she prepares to enter the water for the very first time in the next few days.

The second of five new River Class Offshore Patrol Vessels for the U.K. Royal Navy was officially named during a ceremony at BAE Systems’ site at Scotstoun, Glasgow. Guests watched on October 20 as Lady Wendy Fallon, HMS Medway’s sponsor and wife of Defense Secretary Sir Michael Fallon named the 2,000-metric-ton, 90-meter-long vessel. In keeping with Royal Navy tradition Lady Fallon pressed the button that released a bottle of Dockyard Gin from the Copper Rivet Distillery in Chatham, Kent, against the ship’s hull.

BAE Systems Begins Building UK’s Next Warship

BAE Systems said it has begun to build the first of the U.K. Royal Navy’s new Type 26 Global Combat Ships. Sir Michael Fallon MP, U.K. Secretary of State for Defense, visited the builder’s Glasgow shipyard to press the button to officially commence production on the new warship, and during his speech revealed the vessel’s name: Glasgow. This ceremonial event follows the U.K Government’s recent award of a contract worth approximately £3.7 billion for the first three ships to be built at BAE Systems’ sites in Glasgow.

Future Unmanned Naval Systems for MMCM Program

BAE Systems Supports Thai Navy Patrol Boat Build

BAE Systems announced it has signed a contract with Bangkok Dock to assist in the licensed construction of a second 90-meter Offshore Patrol Vessel for the Royal Thai Navy. Under the agreement, BAE Systems will provide engineering support and advice during construction of the vessel in Thailand. GE Powers Next Generation of UK Navy Ships

GE Marine informs it has been awarded a contract to supply electrical power and propulsion to the Type 26 Global Combat Ships for the U.K. Ministry of Defense (MOD). According to GE, the marine industry often faces the challenge of bringing continual innovation to vessels without sacrificing the reliability of the technology. This is especially true for navy vessels. BAE Systems Awards Software Contract to SENER

The Spanish company SENER, Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A has closed a contract with U.K.-based BAE Systems PLC for the integration between FORAN CAD/CAM System and PTC’s Windchill PLM System to be used in the design and manufacturing activities of Type 26 Program. The bridge section of the U.K.’s second Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier has been loaded out of its dock hall in Glasgow ahead of its first sea voyage to Rosyth. Upper Block 07 is where HMS Prince of Wales will be commanded atop the flight deck and is known as the Forward Island. As the main hub of the ship it contains the bridge and approximately 100 vital mission systems compartments. The Forward Island has been under wraps in Govan since construction on the section began in December 2013, but it is now visible from the west end of Glasgow.

Fendercare to Equip New UK Navy OPVs

Fendercare Marine has signed a contract with BAE Systems Naval Ships for the provision of rudder blades, rudder stocks, sleeves/liners for rudder stock, anchors, chain and deck equipment for three new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the U.K. Royal Navy. Production of the new OPVs commenced in October 2014 at BAE Systems’ facility in Govan, Glasgow. The 90-meter OPV is based on a BAE Systems design already in service with the Brazilian Navy and Royal Thai Navy. Engineers at BAE Systems have modified the design, ensuring it meets the requirements of the Royal Navy. Fendercare said it was chosen for this contract based on its past experience working with BAE Systems and track record of working on the Amazonas class vessels.

BAE Systems to Build OPVs for UK Navy

BAE Systems has been awarded a £348 million contract by the U.K. Ministry of Defense to construct three new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the U.K. Royal Navy. The new 90-meter vessels will be built at BAE Systems’ facilities in Glasgow and will provide additional capability for the Royal Navy. Based on a proven design, the ships will be used to support counter-terrorism, counter-piracy and anti-smuggling operations in the waters around the U.K. and will protect other U.K. interests abroad.

HMS Prince of Wales Delivery Begins

A huge section of hull for HMS Prince of Wales, the second aircraft carrier being delivered to the Royal Navy, has today departed BAE Systems in Glasgow on a 600-mile journey to Rosyth where final assembly of the ship will take place. The 8,000-metric-ton section, known as Lower Block 03, weighs more than an entire Type 45 destroyer and forms the mid-section of the aircraft carrier’s hull from the keel to the hangar deck. The block, transported by seagoing barge, is scheduled to arrive in Rosyth on Saturday, August 2 where work is currently underway to prepare the dock for the final assembly of HMS Prince of Wales which will begin in September.

The Eighth FORAN Users Meeting (FORUM 2014) took place June 11-13, 2014 in the Parador de la Granja, Segovia, and when it was over the organizers proclaimed it a great success, recording the highest number of participants ever. New Warship for Oman’s Royal Navy

HM Naval Base Portsmouth was lit up red, white and green this morning as BAE Systems handed over the third of three new warships to the Royal Navy of Oman. AL RASIKH is a 99 meter corvette designed, built and delivered as part of Project Khareef. The Interim Acceptance ceremony was attended by dignitaries from both Oman and the U.K. who witnessed the ship’s crew board the vessel to raise the National Flag of Oman for the first time. Mick Ord, Managing Director of BAE Systems Naval Ships, said, “This is a proud day for the Royal Navy of Oman as it takes ownership of the third Khareef Class corvette, which has been completed to the highest standard. Type 45 Supply for International Paint

International Paint was selected as the sole marine coatings supplier for the Royal Navy Type 45 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyer program, a contract worth nearly $4 million. The award by BAE Systems Naval Ships, the Prime Contract Organization, covers the first six ships in a potential series of eight due to enter service by 2014. Production of the first of class ship, “HMS Daring”, began in March 2003 and is scheduled to enter service in 2009. Following sub assembly of the bow sections, masts and funnels at Vosper Thornycroft in Portsmouth, all ships will be assembled and launched at BAE Systems facilities on the Clyde.
