Chuan Hup To Buy 20 New Barges & Tugs
Marine shipping company Chuan Hup Holdings expects a new contract to ship coal to Indonesia to contribute significantly to group earnings in 2001, according to a company official. Chuan Hup reportedly has a fleet of about 145 barges, tug boats and other vessels, but would have to add to that to service the new contract. The current estimate calls for about 20 new barges and tug boats.
Crowley Orders ATB at Bollinger
Crowley Fuels LLC has signed a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for the construction of a new 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge (ATB) to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market. The Alaska-class vessel will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators Shipyard, in Amelia, La., with an expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. J.K. Fabrication Winch Earns DNV Approval
J.K. Fabrication announced it has received DNV Type Approval on its Model 40-30-3000 Anchor Winch. The winch can now be specified into existing commercial applications on barges, tugs, fishing and yacht vessels around the world. The company said the new Arctic Prowler Longlining vessel, built in Ketchikan by Alaska Ship and Drydock (now Vigor Industrial) for Alaska Longline Company of Petersburg received this anchor winch. jkfabrication.com
Jefferson Street Bridge Struck by Barge
Tug Thruston B. Morton, pushing 15 barges, allided with the Jefferson Street Bridge in Joliet, Ill., causing the bridge to be damaged enough it will have to be kept in the open position until repaired. Representatives of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) have reported to the USCG the vessel struck the right descending main support column on the northwest corner of the structure. The allision resulted in the forward starboard barge being struck under the opened bridge's catwalk. The vessel's crew intentionally ballasted-down this barge, allowing it to be pulled from under the catwalk (a standard procedure in a case of this nature). The tug and barges resumed its down-bound transit.

Nass Marine Services, a marine division of the Nass Group, handed over a competed project that involved the fabrication of a new deck cargo barge to Ocean Diving & Marine Services that is owned and operated by Mr. Samir Engineer in the Kingdom. Bollinger Delivers for Bouchard
The Bollinger built 35,000 BBL tank barge B. Bollinger Marine Fabricators, L.L.C. delivered B. No. 231, the first of two double hull, 35,000 barrel (BBL) oil tank barge units built to meet OPA’90 requirements to Bouchard Coastwise Management. Morton S. Bouchard III, president and CEO of Bouchard Affiliates, said “The delivery of the B. No. 231 is another step forward for Bouchard, and our commitment to our customers to provide the highest quality equipment that meets their changing needs. The B. No. 231 is a manned, clean oil, oceans tank barge measuring 300-ft. long, with a 64-ft. beam and a depth of 21-ft.. The barge has ten cargo tanks, with Byron Jackson cargo pumps, driven by John Deere engines.
Halter to Convert Bouchard Barge, Tug to ITB Unit
Halter Marine, Inc., has signed a contract with Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc. of Hicksville, N.Y. to convert a 446-ft. single hulled, ocean-going petroleum tank barge (B. No. 155) to a double hull to meet the requirements of OPA 90. The contract also includes options for similar conversions of two additional pairs of sister vessels, all of which were constructed at Halter shipyards. The barge's conversion will be accomplished through the addition of an outside hull. As a result, the barge's dimensions of 446 x 74 x 32.5 ft. will be increased to 468 x 85.5 x 38 ft. and ocean load line capacity will increase from 125,000 barrels of residual fuel oil to 158,000 barrels with segregated ballast. Halter will also install an Intercon connection system on the barge and 127-ft.
MLL Wins U.S. Army Watercraft Mngmt Contract
Maersk Line Limited (MLL) has been awarded a contract for the Care of Supplies in Storage (COSIS) of U.S. Army watercraft. MLL will be responsible for the upkeep and readiness of a range of watercraft, including barges, tugs and various boats, stationed in Yokohama, Japan. The contract has a nine-month base term with four one-year options. “We are pleased that the Army Sustainment Command has entrusted Maersk Line, Limited with the lifecycle management of their watercraft. We are confident that MLL’s 25 years of experience maintaining and operating government vessels and watercraft in overseas locations will translate into the highest levels of service for the Army,” said Bob Bowers, MLL’s Senior Director of Maritime Technical Services, the business unit that will perform the contract.

Senesco Delivers Largest Commercial Floating Dry Dock
Senesco Marine of North Kingstown, R.I. launched the largest commercial floating dry dock in the Northeast United States on May 7, 2013. Senesco built the dry dock for Caddell Dry Dock and Repair Co. of Staten Island, N.Y. The dry dock has a lifting capacity of 7,300 LT, is 420 feet long, and has a 100-foot wide open pontoon deck between its 30-foot tall wing walls. JMS Naval Architects (JMS) of Mystic, Conn. designed the dry dock for Caddell to accommodate large tank barges, tugs, workboats and Coast Guard Cutters.
Shaver Taps Sundial For New Barges
Sundial Marine Construction and Repair, Inc., of Troutdale, Ore., signed a contract to build two new grain barges for Shaver Transportation Co. The Shaver barges will be 273 x 42 ft. wide, and are designed to carry 120,000 bushels of grain on the Columbia River inland waterway system. The barges were designed by J. Cameron McKernon Company for Shaver Transportation. Sundial Marine will work closely with Far West Steel to complete the team approach to this project. Shaver are due to be completed within the fourth quarter of 2001. This marks Sundial's return to the new construction marketplace after an idle period of several years since the last grain barges were built by Sundial.
Tanker Trends: ATB Construction Forges Ahead …. Just Not at Torrid 2002 Pace
Construction of Articulated Tug Barge units (ATB) continues to occupy a prominent place in the order books of several shipyards. However the pace of current building and back ordered units is not as high as the 2000-2002 period. "It looks like we are in for a little 'breather' for a while," said Allen Craft, senior vice president of Intercontinental Engineering-Manufacturing Corporation, Kansas City, Mo. The company manufactures Intercon, one of the most popular couplers between the tug and the barge, which makes the ATB concept workable. "Vessel Management Services, a division of Crowley Maritime was a major driving force in this market when they had two different yards each built two ATBs with 9,280 hp tugs and 155,000 barrel barges using our couplers," Craft said.

Marine shipping company Chuan Hup Holdings expects a contract to ship coal to Indonesia to contribute to group earnings in 2001, the group's finance director, Lim Kwee Siah, said., Lim said the contract was worth an estimated S$300 million in revenue spread over 15 years, or S$20 million a year. "Conservatively, I expect the contract to contribute to group earnings in financial year 2001," Lim said. Talk of the contract had been driving Chuan Hup shares to successive new year highs in recent days. The shares rose to S$1.83 in early trading before easing to S$1.79, up two cents in mid-afternoon. "It is actually an old contract that had been signed in 1995. But it should be starting soon," Lim said.
Tug Safety Training Offered at Port of Milford Haven
A powerful virtual-reality ship simulation system, operated by the Port of Milford Haven is running courses to train tug boat operators from across Britain. The Navigation Suite, based at Milford Waterfront, creates highly realistic computer-generated versions of any port in the world, giving trainees the opportunity to take the controls of any vessel, including tugboats, to practice scenarios. Tug skippers from Williams Marine Services and Teignmouth Harbor Commission spent two days undertaking theory based safety training and working on simulated ‘as real’ scenarios within the port.

(ISI) was recently selected as Salvor to conduct Wreck Removal Operations of a 2,650t Inland Drill Barge following an unsuccessful attempt by another contractor to salvage the barge. The barge partially capsized in Bayou Shaffer, near Morgan City LA on September 4th, 2011. Wind Farm Workers Evacuated from Barge
At 8:26 a.m., the morning of Jan. 30, Liverpool Coastguard were contacted by workers on the work barge UR101 reporting that the barge anchor cables were breaking in heavy seas. The barge had 42 workers onboard and the barge was secured by four anchors, at various times during the night three anchor cables broke leaving the barge secured by only one anchor. A decision was made to evacuate the barge in worsening weather conditions throughout the night. Initially, thirty three workers were evacuated by the barge tug Kingcraig and two support vessels Voe Jarl and Maggy M. The nine remaining workers this morning made a decision that the situation had worsened and for the safety of life contacted the coastguard for assistance.

Inside Modutech Marine’s Work Boat Medium
The U.S. Navy has some spectacular vessels, from submarines to high speed RIBs. They also have dedicated ports and support facilities worldwide. A practical reality of all of this is that the Navy requires efficient and handy boats to support the warhorses. To meet this requirement John Myers of the naval architect firm Hockema & Whalen and Associates have developed a 30 by 15-foot tug with a 5.5-foot draft. Currently the Navy has 24 of these tugs, designated Work Boat Medium, on order from Modutech Marine Inc. of Tacoma, Wash.
