Wärtsilä: License Agreement Extension with Korean Partner

Wärtsilä and its Korean partner, Doosan Engine Co. Ltd, a member of the Doosan Group, have signed a 10-year extension to the licensing agreement to build Wärtsilä low-speed engines. The agreement renewal covers the period from 2012 to 2021. Doosan Engine Co. Ltd, along with its predecessor licence holders Korea Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries, has been a long standing licensee of Wärtsilä, altogether for 28 years. It has produced close to 400 engines with a total power of over 20,000,000 BHP. Doosan Engine is the second biggest engine manufacturer in the world. Under the terms of the agreement, the licensee is authorised to manufacture and sell Wärtsilä low-speed marine diesel engines within its specified territory.

Big Engine Creates Big Problems

Employees at a San Diego shipyard are trying to figure out how to get an engine the size of a large bus out of the sinkhole created by its fall. The engine destined for the Navy's USNS Amelia Earhart slid from the trailer transporting it to the National Steel & Shipbuilding Co. last week, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The 200-ton piece of machinery crushed three cars and broke a water main before settling. The problem is that the engine is also precision machinery and costs millions of dollars. A woman sleeping in one of the parked cars somehow managed to get out without serious injury when the vehicle was hit, the newspaper said. Source: UPI

Palfinger Sells Two Cranes to Kirby

With the support of Donovan Marine, Palfinger Marine crane dealer for the Gulf of Mexico, two Palfinger PK 11001 MC foldable knuckle cranes were delivered to Signal International in Orange, Texas to be installed on two newly constructed 126ft ATB tugs for Kirby Ocean Transport Company. The cranes will be used for launching a small work skiff into the water and general maintenance as well as store stores handling. The tugs are designed to couple with coal barges for transporting coal from Louisiana to a power station in Florida.

Laborde Celebrates 16 Years of Business

Laborde Products of Covington, Louisiana, observes sixteen years in business in 2014. During this time, the company has expanded both its product line and staff, as well as its reach throughout much of the Gulf Coast area. Growth has brought changes to Laborde's staff. Stepping down as president, Tracey Laborde remains company CEO. Brian Laborde now fills the role of president, with Doug Oehrlein as VP of sales and marketing. More diesel technicians and a new service manager augment the company's dedicated service department.

MTU Propulsion for High-speed Ferry

Rolls-Royce said it will supply four 20-cylinder Series 8000 engines from MTU to Australian shipyard Incat Tasmania. The engines will be installed in the new high-speed RoPax ferry to be used by the Virtu Ferries company on the Malta-Sicily service that it operates daily throughout the year. Set to be the largest high-speed catamaran operating in the Mediterranean, the vessel is 110 m in length and can accommodate 900 passengers plus crew and 167 vehicles on 490 truck lane meters.

Playing the Tier Game

With few exceptions, marine power is diesel power and emissions levels from diesel engines are coming under increased scrutiny and regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency. The levels of acceptable NOx, carbon monoxide and particulate matter for diesel engines in U.S. flagged vessels depends on the displacement of the engine. The EPA has settled on a liters-per-cylinder measurement to determine the schedule to meet the emission requirements. For example, marine diesel engines between 1.2 and 2.5 liters per cylinder have had to meet what is known as Tier Two requirements since 2004. These are engines typically used to power small gensets, bow thrusters, fire pumps and other auxiliary engine requirements.

India's Oil Imports Surged in 2017

India's oil imports rose by about 1.8 percent in 2017 to a record 4.37 million barrels per day (bpd) as the country boosted purchases to feed its expanded refining capacity, ship-tracking data obtained from sources and data compiled by Thomson Reuters Oil Research & Forecasts showed. To meet its growing fuel demand India, the world's third-biggest oil consumer, raised its refining capacity in the second half of 2017. Market Forecast: Vessel Power is Increasing

Marine propulsion systems are expected to grow to become a $5 billion market by 2007. Over the next five years vessel tonnage delivered by yards is expected to increase by 4% while vessel numbers fall by 10%. However, total propulsion power should increase by 8% when compared to the 1997-2002 period. These are amongst the results of a new study, ‘The World Marine Propulsion Report’, to be published in November by analysts Douglas-Westwood. Addressing delegates to the annual Lloyd’s List Ship Propulsion Conference in London today, Douglas-Westwood managing director John Westwood said, “The overall picture is of fewer but larger vessels with bigger engines.

BUKH SOLAS Range Expanded with Volvo Penta Power

Volvo Penta and Danish manufacturer BUKH have entered into a partnership by which Volvo Penta will supply BUKH with diesel engines of up to 16 liter capacity for new propulsion solutions for lifeboats. The agreement between the two companies enables BUKH to extend its SOLAS engine range, and allows Volvo Penta to extend the use of its products in new applications. Lifeboat manufacturers will benefit by the increase in available power options and leveraging of comprehensive technology offered by the two companies.

Japan: Little Chance Sanchi Oil Slick Reaches Its Coast

Japan sees little chance of the oil spill from a stricken Iranian tanker that sank on Sunday in the East China Sea reaching its shores, an official at the nation’s environment ministry said on Tuesday. The large tanker Sanchi (IMO:9356608) sank in the worst oil ship disaster in decades and produced a large oil slick, Chinese media and Japanese authorities said on Monday, as worries grew over damage to the marine ecosystem. The vessel’s crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis are all believed to have perished in the incident.

China to top Japan as World's Biggest LNG Importer

Pollution fight drives surge in pipeline, LNG imports but Japan remains world's biggest importer of LNG. Beijing's crackdown on pollution has put China on track to overtake Japan this year as the world's biggest importer of natural gas, used to replace dirtier coal. China - already the biggest importer of oil and coal - is the world's third biggest user of natural gas behind the United States and Russia, but has to import around 40 percent of its total needs as domestic production can't keep up with demand.

Royston Expands UK Engineering Facilities

Royston Diesel Power has doubled the size of its UK engineering facilities to support continuing global growth in its marine engine service business and new technology development. As part of a £500,000 ($676,000) investment program the company has opened an additional 15,000 sq. ft. of engineering workshop premises alongside its existing headquarters on the banks of the River Tyne. As well as increasing the company’s engine repair and maintenance capability, the new center will also provide a focus for a range of other technical support functions.

Fairbanks Morse to Power US Navy's LPD 29

Fairbanks Morse said it has been awarded a contract to build and deliver the main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE) that will power LPD 29, the U.S. Navy’s thirteenth San Antonio landing platform dock (LPD) class ship. Construction of the engines will begin in 2019 for scheduled delivery to Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. in 2020. WWII Museum’s PT-305 Sails Again

Commercial workboat philanthropy on display on PT-305: WWII Museum’s PT-305 sails again after a far reaching donor-funded restoration. In March, the National WWII Museum in New Orleans launched its reconstructed PT-305, built locally by Higgins Industries in 1943. The museum acquired the boat known as the USS Sudden Jerk in 2007, restoration began in 2009, and it now sails Lake Pontchartrain as an interactive exhibit. PT-305, with a fifteen-man crew, belonged to a 12-ship squadron operating in the Mediterranean from 1944 until the war ended in 1945.

New Diesel Engine Lines Available for Workboat Market

In recent months several diesel engine manufacturers have expanded their existing engine and generator ranges to include models suitable for workboat, large yacht and fishing vessel applications. This translates to more propulsion choices for boat builders and owners. Following is a look at four newly launched lines. Last September, MTU introduced the new 8000 series, moving the company into medium-speed engine market. The first engine of the line is the 20V 8000, which is capable of producing 9,000 kW at 1,150 rpm. The 20V is primarily intended to be used as main propulsion for large yachts and workboats, as well as for diesel-electric propulsion and onboard power supply systems in cruise ships.

Explosion on Iranian Tanker Repels Rescue Team

Fire rages for 4th day; tanker collided with freight ship on Saturday. Rescue crews were forced to retreat from a stricken Iranian oil tanker in the East China Sea on Wednesday following an explosion on the ship as a fire raged for a fourth day after a dramatic collision. The blast happened on board the tanker in the afternoon after rescue crews were dousing the ship with foam in an attempt to put out the fire, China's Transport Ministry (MOT) said in a statement on Wednesday. The cause and damage to the tanker from the incident were not clear.

Maersk, IBM to Launch Blockchain Joint Venture
