The ICL Group's Phoenix Plan is breathing new life into the centuries-old salt and potash mines located in the Bages district of central Catalonia. The project covers various fields, such as building a potash and a vacuum salt plant, new rail accesses and a specialised terminal at the Port of Barcelona. The port terminal, involving a total investment of € 69 million, will enable worldwide exports of potash, a mineral essential for fertilising fields, and high-quality salt especially for the chemical industry, and other sectors. USNS Carl Brashear, which will be the newest ship in the U.S. Navy's Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo/ammunition ships, was christened and launched during a morning ceremony Sept. 18 at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in . After a series of tests and sea trials, the ship will be delivered to the Navy’s Military Sealift Command for operations next year. General Dynamics NASSCO launched the U.S. Navy's newest resupply ship, USNS Carl Brashear (T-AKE 7), during a christening ceremony. The ship is named in honor of Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear, the first African-American to qualify and serve as a Master Diver in the Navy. Brashear's military career was portrayed in the 2000 movie Men of Honor. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead and the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Joe Campa, Jr., spoke at the ceremony. Lauren Brashear, Master Chief Brashear's granddaughter, christened the ship by breaking the traditional bottle of champagne against the bow before the ship slid into San Diego Bay. More than 3,000 people attended the ceremony, including Robert De Niro, who starred in Men of Honor.

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON)(SW/FMF) Joe R. Campa Jr. testified, Feb. 7, before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, which oversees all military construction projects, quality of life and veterans affairs related matters. Campa appeared with senior enlisted leaders from the Marine Corps, Army and Air Force in the two-hour hearing, and told the committee that conversations with Navy families he's had the last twelve months centered around what he referred to as three pillars of support: health care, child care and housing. He added that world events have led to a greater need for more consistent focus on supporting the Navy family.

Campa Jr. addressed enlisted service members at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain July 1. Campa focused on a wide range of topics, including individual augmentee (IA) missions, the importance of the Physical Readiness Test, rating mergers and off-duty education. The MCPON also stressed the importance of leadership. “I firmly believe that the quality of a Sailor’s life is directly tied to the quality of their leadership,” said Campa. “As I go out and visit commands to see how they’re doing, the commands that are doing very well are well lead. Those that are struggling have challenges in leadership.

Campa Jr., addressed approximately 350 Sailors aboard USS Monterey (CG 61) on May 1. Monterey recently returned to Norfolk after six months of operating in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea.

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON)(SW/FMF) Joe R. Campa Jr. traveled to the Pacific Northwest for a series of visits, ceremonies and all hands calls April 28 and 29. Campa, who served as Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay senior enlisted advisor before taking office last July, spent several hours outside Seattle at Fort Lewis where Sailors receive three weeks of training prior to departure for JTF-GTMO. Campa observed training and spoke to the members of the Navy Expeditionary Guard Battalion. “Guantanamo Bay is an operational environment just as important as the frontlines of Iraq or Afghanistan,” Campa told them. Campa also conducted an all-hands call for Naval Base (NB) Kitsap E-6 and below Sailors.

More than 1,100 submariners and their guests attended the 107th Enlisted Submariner's Birthday Ball at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel Grand Ballroom on April 28. Twenty submariner commands from the Naval Base (NB) Kitsap region attended the event, which included special guests: Rear Adm. Frank M. Drennan, the commander of Submarine Group 9; Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SW/FMF) Joe Campa Jr.; Pacific Fleet Command Master Chief (SS/SW) Rick West; U.S. 3rd Fleet Command Master Chief (SS/SW) Mark Rudes; Submarine Force Pacific Command Master Chief (SS) Mo Pollard. Campa addressed and thanked the crews for what they do for the country and thanked the family members for their support of our submariners.
