Double-Ended Cat Launched in Brazil
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali do Brasil SpA, the Brazilian yard of the Rodriquez Group, on June 13 launched the first of seven double ended catamarans under construction for Barcas SA in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. This catamaran will operate on the Rio de Janeiro – Niteroi route. The vessel is completely made in aluminum and has a maximum capacity of 1,200 passengers, with 900 seated and 300 standing. The catamaran is equipped with twin pod type propulsors with two variable pitch propellers with 360° rotation to maximize maneuverability and at the same time reach a speed of 18 knots, suitable for the three mile route. The catamaran is scheduled for delivery in July.
MAN Diesel to Power Catamarans
MAN Diesel announced a contract for eight engines to power two catamarans. The catamarans will be the latest in a series of fast multihull ferries from leading catamaran exponent Incat of Tasmania, Australia. With an overall length of 367 ft. and a beam of 98 ft., the new catamarans are the largest ever built in Australia. The new contract also involves the first orders received for the 28/33 D diesel since the engine’s transfer from MAN Diesel’s UK facilities to its engine works in Augsburg, Germany. In detail, the contract covers eight of the largest, 20 cylinder versions of MAN Diesel’s four-stroke, 52 degree vee configuration 28/33 D engines, each rated 9,000 kW at 1000 rpm and represents a seamless transition from UKbuilt engines to German-built engines in Incat vessels.
LMC Takes Delivery of New Vessel
Lead Mead Cruises (LMC) of Boulder City, Nev., operates a fleet of four vessels - a number that will increase to five in spring 2001 when LMC takes delivery of a 57 x 17-ft. catamaran currently under construction at Kvichak Marine. The catamaran is designed by Morrelli & Melvin and will cruise 65 miles up Lake Mead and the Colorado River to the edge of the Grand Canyon. "We really wanted a catamaran to operate on this run," said Rob Fair of LMC. Powered by twin Caterpillar 3196-TA diesel engines, rated for 660 bhp @ 2,300 rpm, and fitted to ZF 350A marine gears, the catamaran will cruise at 27 knots and top out at 32 knots. Transmissions will be fitted to 28-in., stainless steel, five-bladed propellers. Seating on the main and aft decks accommodates 68 passengers.
Phillips Orders Catamaran for Glacier Tour
Phillips Cruises & Tours will put a new 131.2 ft., 400 passenger, 35 knot catamaran excursion vessel into service on Prince William Sound in June. The vessel is being built by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, Inc., for use on Phillips Cruises' "26 Glacier Cruise." It will be the 25th high-speed passenger catamaran to be built by the Whidbey Island, Wash. boatbuilder. The cruise visits 26 glaciers in Prince William Sound on a daily schedule. Phillips took delivery of the first of the passenger catamarans Nichols Brothers built in 1984. Nichols Brothers builds the high-speed catamarans under license from Australia's International Catamarans, Ltd., original designer of the catamaran style excursion and commuter ferries.
Nichols Bros. To Build Catamaran For Service On San Francisco Bay
The Alameda/Oakland Ferry Service on San Francisco Bay ordered a new 315-passenger catamaran ferry from Nichols Bros. Boatbuilders. Measuring 112 x 33 ft. (34.1 x 10 m), the catamaran, which is being designed by International Catamarans of Australia, is expected to go into service in the fall 2001. The vessel will become the newest member of Nichols-built catamarans that are currently operating between the Alameda area and the San Francisco ferry terminal, as well as other landings by the Alameda/Oakland ferry service. Expected to operate at a maximum loaded speed of 26 knots over its regular 6.5-mile route on the Bay, the vessel will be powered by KTA 38 Cummins engines operating at 1,190-hp driving standard propellers.
Kvichak Readies to Deliver Catamaran
Kvichak Marine Industries is currently building a 54 ft. catamaran scheduled for a January 2000 delivery to California Fish & Game. Designed by Teknicraft of Auckland, New Zealand, the vessel is one of a trio of catamaran designs being built at the yard's new Seattle facility. To be named Thresher, the partially foil-supported catamaran will be stationed in Dana Point as a Fish and Game Marine Enforcement patrol vessel for Southern California. The all-alminum catamaran, with a beam of 20 ft., weighs about 25 tons fully loaded and is powered by twin CAT 3196 DITA diesel engines. The CAT pair will drive 30-in. stainless steel propellers through Twin Disc 5114A gears at a cruising speed of 26 knots.
Incat Crowther to Develop 37.5m Catamaran Motor Yacht
Incat Crowther has been commissioned to develop a new high speed catamaran motor yacht for an international businessman. The vessel will be capable of cruising at 25 knots and will have long range capabilities in excess of 3500nm. The stylish new catamaran will be 123 ft. in length, and with a 34-ft.beam will provide deck space on a vessel that will be designed for long range cruising. The vessel will be powered by a pair of MTU 12V4000 M71 main engines driving fixed pitch propellers through a reverse/reduction ZF gearbox.
Moose Boats Delivers 2 Patrol Boats
Aluminum boat manufacturer Moose Boats announced the delivery of two patrol boats. The builder delivered a M2-38’ Patrol Catamaran to the United States Park Police in Fort Tilden, New York, as well as a M2-38’ Wide Cabin Patrol Catamaran to the New Jersey State Police in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. The U.S. Park Police’ all aluminum catamaran is powered by twin 425hp Cummins turbo diesel engines with TwinDisc transmissions coupled to Hamilton HJ292 water-jets. Maneuvering is achieved by dual complete Hamilton BlueArrow control stations at both the central cabin helm station and cockpit.
Golden Gate’s High-Speed Ferry at Bay Ship & Yacht
The Golden Gate Ferry’s high-speed, 450-passenger ferry, the Motor Vessel (MV) Mendocino, is in dry-dock at Bay Ship & Yacht’s Alameda shipyard for its periodic U.S. Coast Guard inspection. While in dry-dock, the vessel will also undergo minor repairs. The aluminum catamaran ferry was designed by International Catamaran in Australia and built by Nichols Brothers in Washington in 2001. It is Golden Gate Ferry’s second high-speed catamaran operating on San Francisco Bay, and capable of speeds up to 36 knots provided by four water-jets.
Seacor Awards Kongsberg Maritime Contract
Kongsberg Maritime Inc. has been awarded a contract to supply the Class 2 Dynamic Positioning Systems for six Gulfcraft crewboats (hulls 462-467) currently in production at Gulfcraft Shipyard in Patterson La., for SEACOR Marine. Kongsberg Maritime will be supplying its latest K-POS 21 DP2 system with a back up joystick, 2 DGPS systems and a Radius 1000. Radius is the latest in relative positioning systems developed for operation in the harsh and demanding environments that crewboats operate in, utilizing radar technology. The crewboats will range in power and size with two 190 ft. vessels, two 175 ft. vessels, one 165 ft. vessel and a 165 ft. catamaran. They will be the first DP2 class crewboats and the first DP2 class catamaran crewboat delivered in the world.
Austal Secures New Contracts

Hamilton Jets For Portuguese River Catamarans
Image Marine of Western Australia, a member of the Austal Group, has ordered Hamilton Waterjets for two River Catamarans to operate in Portugal. Each of the two 121 ft. (37-m) catamarans will be fitted with twin Hamilton Model HM651 waterjets, which will be controlled using Hamilton's MECS electronic control system, to give an operational speed of 29 knots.
Kvichak Delivers Law Enforcement
The deployment of catamarans as law enforcement patrol vessels has become a trend among the U.S. patrol agencies. The Alaska Department of Public Safety (ADPS) recently joined this trend by taking delivery of a 65 x 25 ft. aluminum catamaran, the Cama'i. Constructed by Kvichak Marine Industries and designed by Crowther Multihulls, the Cam'i is scheduled to patrol the waters around Kodiak Island, the Alaska Peninsula and Bristol Bay. According to Captain Al Cain of ADPS, research shows that catamarans offers a safe, stable work platform in the open seas, this along with increased fuel efficiency and increased usable deck space are factors for choosing the catamaran for the new patrol vessel. ADPS requires a top speed of approximately 25 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots.
Kvichak Increases Presence in Cat Patrol Boat Market
Kvichak Marine Industries has furthered its presence in the catamaran and patrol boat markets by combining the two to construct patrol catamarans. The company's newest delivery is an add-on to its 54-ft. (16.4 m) patrol catamaran that was built for California Fish and Game (CAF&G). Named Thresher, the vessel will be joined by a sistership, Marlin, this coming spring. In addition, the company said the Alaska Fish & Wildlife Protection (AF&WP) - that has ordered a new cat for fisheries patrol. This new generation of catamarans is conducive because of their increased stability and usable deck space for patrol operations. Each will also house a variety of deck equipment along with boarding launches.
FBMA Marine Signs Contract for Ferries
FBMA Marine Inc. (FBMA), the Aboitiz-owned shipbuilder based in , has signed a new building contract with Wightlink, . The order is to design and build 2 new 41m high speed passenger catamarans, for use on the Portsmouth – Ryde crossing. This success builds on FBMA Marine Inc. new building contract for a 70m Ropax ferry for Scotland UK, and a 57m high speed catamaran ferry for .The order for FBMA project 1026 and 1027, was awarded following an international tender and the 2 vessels, due for delivery in summer 2009, will provide replacements for 2 existing hi speed catamaran vessels. The new catamarans, designed by BMT Nigel Gee, have been configured to optimise both seakeeping and fuel efficiency on the very busy - Ryde commuter route.
Rodman Polyships Delivers Catamaran Fast Ferry
Over the last several years, Rodman has designed, built and delivered different types of catamarans, not only for passenger transport but also for other purposes such as hydrographic, research or offshore windmill support catamarans. At the end of 2015, Rodman and Trasmapi signed a contract for the design and build of a new ferry to operate on the Ibiza-Formentera route, starting this summer. The catamaran has been designed and optimized specifically to operate on this route and to provide clients with improved seaworthiness and boarding conditions.

Blount-Barker Signs Contract for Whale Watch Catamaran
Blount-Barker Shipbuilding signed a contract with a B.B.O., LLC of Portsmouth, New Hampshire for the construction of a 124 ft. Whale Watch Catamaran for operation in Bar Harbor, Maine. The vessel designed by Crowther Multihulls of Sydney, Australia will operate both seasonal whale watch tours and high-speed commuter service. The 124 ft. x 36 ft. catamaran designed with a main, mid and upper deck will accommodate 444 passengers at a loaded operating speed of 40 knots. The vessel’s structure will be designed to DNV Rules and Regulations for the classification of high-speed light craft and built to U.S. Coast Guard Subchapter K Rules and Regulations.
Allen Marine To Construct Aluminum Catamaran
Allen Marine, Sitka, Alaska, is set to build a 78 ft. (23.7 m) aluminum catamaran ordered by Allen Marine Tours. Equipped with four Lugger diesel propulsion engines, each coupled to a Hamilton waterjet, the low wake vessel will be capable of speeds of more than 30 knots. The vessel, which will be used within Alaska's tourism industry will be the 11th 78 ft. (23.7 m) catamaran built for the company by Allen Marine. Allen is also constructing a fourth 78 ft. (23.7 m) catamaran for an East Coast company. Built to the custom specifications of ferry operator N.Y. Waterway, the first three boats were delivered this past February.
Fiberglass Catamaran From China
Guanzhou Min Hua Yacht Manufacture Ltd. delivered the fourth in a series of high speed catamaran passenger vessels to Elison, an operator in the far south of Guangdong province. The catamaran will service the two islands of Shangchuan Dao and Xiachuan Dao, which are busy terminals on an otherwise empty stretch of coastline. The islands lie about 10 miles off shore and are popular holiday destinations for domestic tourists. At 23.8 x 6 x 2.1 m the catamarans are among the larger vessels on the run to the islands. The vessels carry 130 passengers in a single main deck cabin with a pilothouse on the upper deck. Propulsion power is a pair of 550 hp Cummins KTA19 M2 engines turning .700x.952-m 3-blad propellers through 2.5:1 reduction Hanzhou J400 gear boxes.
