ClassNK Guidelines for Wind-Assisted Propulsion

UK Funds Study on Navigation of Autonomous Ships

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), a government agency has contributed to a new UK government-funded study on navigational requirements for autonomous maritime vessels.According to UKHO, it worked together with partner organisations L3 ASV and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to identify the future data requirements for autonomous shipping, and explore how navigational and wider geospatial data can be used to enable the safe navigation of smart and unmanned autonomous vessels.The study, funded by the Department for Transport’s Transport Technology Research Innovation Grant (T-TRIG), started by exploring the characteristics of current navigational data and charts in terms of what they comprise, their structure and how they are updated.

Maersk to Trial AI-powered Situational Awareness Technology

Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk will be the first in the world to trial artificial intelligence (AI) powered perception and situational awareness technology on a containership.Under a deal signed with Boston-based Sea Machines Robotics, Maersk will install computer vision, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and perception software aboard one of its new-build Winter Palace ice-class containerships.Sea Machines said its solution uses AI to improve at-sea situational awareness…

Maid of the Loch: Historic Rebuild Deal Signed

The first contract to be let in the £5.5 million project to rebuild the Maid of the Loch, Loch Lomond’s Paddle Steamer, was signed on Monday, February 22, 2016. The contract has been awarded to OSD-IMT Ltd., of Dundee, and is for marine consultancy services. OSD will provide the necessary naval architecture, engineering, structure, and outfitting expertise to produce all the required calculations, drawings and designs to ensure that the rebuild meets all regulatory requirements.

Damen Names Royal Oman Navy Flagship

Dignitaries from the Ministry of Defense of Oman joined senior Damen management at a ceremony at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, Vlissingen on May 8 to mark the naming of the Royal Navy of Oman’s new flagship, the Sail Training Clipper Shabab Oman II. The 87m long steel-hulled vessel is a three-mast, full square rigger built to design principles set for the iconic tea clippers of the 19th century, benefiting from 21st century technology and comfort. Featuring a fully unfurled sail area of 2,700m2, the vessel can accommodate 34 navy recruits plus a 58-strong crew.

Titanic Replica Tycoon Hosts New York Dinner

Australian businessman and owner of Blue Star Cruise Line, Professor Clive Palmer, hosted the black-tie event aboard the retired 'USS Intrepid'. The organizers say that the event was attended by a who’s who of world leaders, senior diplomats and major political figures, who were treated to a lavish 11-course menu, first class entertainment and the unveiling of Titanic II blueprints. Singer/songwriter Roxy Darr's rendition of the song 'My Heart Will Go On', impressed Professor Palmer to the extent that he uploaded a video of her performance onto social networking site Vimeo. Seafarers’ Center Grand Reopening

On May 17, 2011, the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) hosts the Grand Reopening of its International Seafarers’ Center in Port Newark, NJ. SCI undertook a major renovation of the Center, completing construction late last year, to establish a first-rate facility for the global shipping industry working in the Port of New York and New Jersey, the East Coast’s largest port. “The welfare of international trade in the Port of New York and New Jersey hinges on this Center,” says the Rev. David M. Rider, President & Executive Director of SCI.

Seven Seas Mariner To Undergo Pod Adjustment

Radisson Seven Seas' 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner will enter dry-dock for 24 days this month to undergo repairs to one of the two pods in its pod propulsion system - a significant design innovation that creates a smoother, quieter ride for guests but has also required adjustment in most of the new ships employing the advanced 21st century technology. As a result, the line has had to cancel the vessel's April 22, 26 and May 9 cruises. The vessel is expected to return to service on May 26, where it will commence a seven-night voyage from Venice to Rome. The unscheduled dry-dock is viewed as a preventive as well as corrective measure.

Navy Reserve Launches Next Phase of Forcewide Communication

Communicating with more than 100,000 Navy reservists and other key constituents worldwide has been a daunting task over the years. However, the commander of Navy Reserve Forces Command (CNRFC), launched 21st century technology June 25 to solve an age-old challenge. Reservists and others interested in the Navy Reserve Force can sign up for CNRFC’s list server for reserve-related information via e-mail. The list server, a computer server designed to automatically manage mailing lists with thousands of subscribers, will replace the current force e-mail distribution list (FEDL), which currently uses large distribution lists in the Microsoft Outlook program to send information to 8,000 recipients. People can subscribe for up to 13 e-mail groups at https://listserv.navyreserve.navy.mil.

Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman To Team For USCG Proposal

Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman Ingalls Shipbuilding announced the creation of a joint venture partnership under which the two major corporations will submit a proposed "best value" solution for the U.S. Coast Guard's Deepwater Program. This newly formed joint venture - Integrated Coast Guard Systems - formalizes a partnership underway for more than three years. The team is hosting its Functional Design Review (FDR) for the Coast Guard this week at Lockheed Martin's facility in Moorestown. The U.S. Coast Guard's Deepwater Program was established to recapitalize the organization's ships, aircraft and system platforms to support deepwater missions. The missions include Maritime Law Enforcement, Maritime Safety, National Defense and Marine Environmental Protection.
