Livanos to be Remembered at World Maritime Day Event

The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will posthumously honor George P. Livanos; and his protégés will pay tribute to their mentor at the first North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) Awards Dinner being held in conjunction with the 2008 World Maritime Day Observance on October 23rd. George P. Livanos was the founder of the MEPA Movement just over 25 years ago. George P. Livanos (1926-1997) was born in . During World War II, he served in the American army in . In 1946, he received a degree in economics from the of and in 1949 founded his own company, Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises, Ltd. of . George P.

Chem Tanker Explodes Off Virginia

On Saturday, February 28, the 570-ft. chemical tanker Bow Mariner apparently caught fire and exploded about 50 miles off the coast off Chincoteague, Virginia. As of Monday, March 1, only nine of the 27 crew have been accounted for; six alive and three dead, while it appears that the search for the remaining 18 crew members will be called off. The tanker was carrying a reported 3.5 million gallons of industrial grade ethanol, and an estimated 193,000 gallons of bunker fuel. It exploded shortly after 6 p.m. and sank at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Singapore-flagged was owned by Odfjell and operated by Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises Ltd. in Greece. It was transiting from New York to Houston with 24 Filipino and three Greek crewmembers.

ASRY Up 7% in 3Q

Following on from the earlier success of the first half of this year, Bahrain’s ASRY, has turned in a successful third quarter series of results with an increase in business and sales, which were up some 7% on the previous quarter. In all some 28 vessels were in the yard for repairs and refurbishment, with 30 percent being in the tanker class with the majority being ULCCs and VLCCs. The yard was also kept extremely busy with other classes of vessels ranging from lpg carriers, livestock carriers through to RoRos, dredgers and general cargo. During this third quarter over a hundred specifications were received from owners around the world with a contact award success rate of 26%.

Euronav Appoints New Commercial Manager

The executive committee of Euronav NV announced its appointment of Mr. Jonathan Lee as the Commercial Manager of Euronav NV. Lee joined the company in January 3, 2006, and as commercial manager, will be responsible for the company’s commercial transactions including chartering both in and out, as well as sales and purchases. Lee brings over 20 years of shipping experience and expertise to the Euronav. Prior to joining Euronav, Lee worked with Clarksons and was commercial manager of the Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises, Ltd.
