Antwerp Port Achieves Record for 7th Year

The Port of Antwerp has seen significant growth for the seventh year in a row, with freight volume up 1.3% to 238 million tonnes. Although some segments are under pressure, the port says it is making progress both economically and in sustainability and mobility.Container freight, in particular, gained market share (up from 27.5% to 28.2%), while the dry bulk segment for its part saw its total volume expand by 3.4%.In breakbulk on the other hand, with steel as the main product, the consequences of turbulence in world were clearly felt, resulting in an overall contraction of 13%.In the liquid bulk segment too the volume was down, by 4.4%…

2018: Record Year for Port of Antwerp

With a growth of 5.2% in 2018 compared to previous year, the Port of Antwerp has confirmed the earlier forecasts for a 6th consecutive year record."The confirmation of the port's attractiveness and the consolidation of its position as a global player and the largest integrated European chemical cluster are essential to the continuity of its role as the largest economic engine of Belgium. Below you will find the final annual figures for 2018," said a press release from the Europe’s second-largest seaport.The total transhipment in 2018 was 235.2 million tonnes, a new record, with unprecedented growth in all cargotypes, it said.The strong growth in container traffic continued to 130.9 million tonnes (+6.4%) or 11.1 million TEU (+6.2%).

Another Record Year for Port of Antwerp

With expected growth of 5.1% compared with last year, 2018 looks set to be a record year for the Port of Antwerp for the sixth time in a row."In 2019 the Port Authority will keep to the same course, further building a sustainable future for the port. In pursuit of this goal it is concentrating heavily on structural solutions to challenges such as mobility, the energy transition, digitisation and innovation," said a press release from the port authority.The expected total freight volume in 2018 comes to 235 million tonnes, a new record, with unparalleled growth in all types of cargo. The large expansion in container freight continues, reaching 130 million tonnes (up 5.8%) or 11 million TEU (up 5.5%).

Borealis to Invest in Port of Antwerp

The Austrian petrochemical company Borealis has announced that it is to build a new production plant on its existing site in Kallo, in the Antwerp port area.According to a press release, the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plant will use the very latest technology in terms of sustainable production and energy efficiency. With this initiative the port of Antwerp confirms and reinforces its role as the largest chemical cluster in Europe.The intention to build a new PDH plant to convert propane into propylene has been known for some time. The propylene in turn can be used to make polypropylene, a plastic with many applications which is employed in among others the car industry.Borealis has now decided to build this new plant at the existing Borealis production site in Kallo.

Antwerp Port Achieves Highest Throughput

The port of Antwerp handled a freight volume of 148,344,168 tonnes during the first nine months of this year. That’s 3.7% more than the same period last year. Both the container volume and the liquid bulk volume were strongly up, which helps to explain the continuing growth. If the port stays on trend it will finish this year with a new record freight volume. Last year was already an all-time record with a volume of 190.8 million tonnes. The container volume rose during the first nine months by 6.0% to 81,127,972 tonnes. In terms of standard containers the growth is 5.0%, ending at 6,725,777 TEU. Port of Antwerp Maintains Growth Trend

The port of Antwerp handled 98,229,046 tonnes of freight in the first six months of 2014. That is 2.7% more than in the same period last year, itself already a record year. Container freight once more contributed good growth figures, while liquid bulk too continued the upward trend. The container freight volume rose by 4.0% during the first six months, to 53,553,954 tonnes. This corresponds to 4,416,132 TEU, an increase of 2.9%. March was an absolute record month for containers. Ro/ro freight for its part continued to perform well during the past six months, with a volume of 2,346,506 tonnes, 1.3% more than the same period last year, although the number of cars handled was down slightly (by 1.4%) to 643,164.

Odfjell Signs Site Reservation in France

Odfjell Terminals Europe and Grand Port Maritime du Havre (GPMH) have today signed a Site Reservation Protocol for a plot of land in the Port of Le Havre to develop a bulk liquid terminal. The planned terminal will be located inside the Port of Le Havre along the Grand Canal Maritime and the plot is approximately 31.5 hectares. The first phase will consist of at least 150,000 cbm for storage of petrochemical and petroleum-related products. Construction is currently expected to start in 2015 and the terminal is foreseen to open in 2nd half 2017. The total investment for the first phase is estimated to be about €150-200 million. HAROPA – Port of Le Havre is one of Europe’s largest ports, strategically located by the entrance to River Seine.
