In the Search for Ship Energy Efficiency, Don't Forget Waste Heat
Fuel-agnostic and suitable for newbuilds and retrofit, Organic Rankine Cycle waste heat recovery systems are making headway as an energy-efficiency measure.Market prospects are looking so good for waste heat recovery systems that Orcan Energy recently expanded its industry relationships by partnering with Goltens on installations.Andreas Sichert, CEO of Orcan Energy, said: “Waste heat recovery is one of the most powerful and underutilized tools for improving energy efficiency.

Branson: Virgin Cruise Line Will Overcome Coronavirus Fears
British entrepreneur Richard Branson heralded his first cruise ship "Scarlet Lady" on Friday as targeting a younger generation of holidaymakers with a range of attractions that he believes will outweigh any fears around coronavirus.Despite the unfortunate timing, with passengers on one ship quarantined in Japan after hundreds caught the virus and another turned away by five countries over fears someone on board may be ill, Branson sees cruises as a growth area.In an event at Dover…
Exhaust Economizers: A Silent Contributor to Green Technology
Next generation economizers are being introduced by Ulmatec Pyro. This will carry on the history of 35 years of heat recovery from ship’s exhaust – a technology that’s still unknown for many in the marine industry. You can’t ignore waste energy recovery systems if you want to participate in discussions about efficient marine designs. That statement is based on the fact that most diesel engines on board a vessel still operate on an efficiency scale in the 30 percent range. The remaining 60-70 percent represents losses, converted into heat.
Fincantieri Orders Heat Power Systems for Cruise Newbuilds
Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri has selected Climeon’s heat power system Climeon Ocean for its energy efficient solutions, purchasing six Climeon Ocean 450M systems to be installed in its upcoming new cruise ship builds. Total capacity on all ships is up to 2.7 MW. With the latest order, Fincantieri has become the first shipyard contracted to install Climeon Ocean on new cruise ships. Deliveries of the Climeon Ocean systems will start in 2017. Fabrizio Cafagna, Head of Basic Design at Fincantieri’s Merchant Ship Business Unit…
