A Canadian company has loaded a test cargo of solid bitumen onto a vessel destined for a refinery in China, the latest effort by the energy industry to avoid congested export pipelines and find new ways to export more oil sands crude.Calgary, Alberta-based Melius Energy loaded 130 barrels of neat bitumen, similar in consistency to a hockey puck, onto a 20-foot shipping container in Edmonton, Alberta, and transported it by rail to the Port of Prince Rupert in northern British Columbia.

The British Columbia’s Port of Prince Rupert and DP World have marked a historic milestone as Fairview Container Terminal handled its millionth container (TEU) for the first time in a calendar year.The 40-foot TEU was loaded with dimensional lumber in Prince George before being shipped to Prince Rupert by train and loaded onto the COSCO Africa container ship to be sent to market.“DP World is proud to have achieved the million TEU milestone,” said Maksim Mihic, General Manager DP World (Canada) Inc. “We congratulate and thank the men and women whose hard work and dedication made this achievement possible. Royal Vopak and AltaGas have entered into a joint venture and will invest together in the development of the Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal (RIPET). RIPET is expected to be the first propane export facility off the west coast of Canada. The project is to be designed to ship 1.2 million tonnes of propane per annum, with approximately 96,000 cubic meters of storage capacity. The facility is expected to be commissioned in Q1 2019. Vopak will take a 30 percent interest in RIPET. Vopak's investment is underpinned by long-term customer contracts and  is fully aligned with Vopak's long-term strategy where storage and handling of gas has been earmarked as one of the strategic focus areas.

AltaGas says it will proceed with construction of Canada’s first West Coast propane export facility. It has federal approval and long-term commercial agreements in hand. The Ridley Export Terminal, located at Prince Rupert, B.C., will be designed to ship 1.2 million tonnes of propane per year and is estimated to cost approximately $450 - $500 million, the company says. The terminal, near Prince Rupert, will cut shipping distances to Asian markets to 10 days from 25 compared the U.S. Gulf Coast, the company says. The project is expected to create 200 to 250 construction jobs and about 40 to 50 permanent jobs once operational. “This export facility is another promising development for our province, connecting producers in northeast B.C. to markets in Asia,” said B.C.

Zim Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) is introducing an additional Asia-Pacific North West Trade route, CEN – (China Express Northwest service) with the following rotation: Xingang – Qingdao – Shanghai – Prince Rupert – Xingang. CEN is the only Pacific North West service in the market to call Xingang directly, offering the fastest transit time in the market on the eastbound leg from Xingang, Qingdao and Shanghai. It also offers smooth gateway via Prince Rupert to US and Canada inland destinations, with efficient rail connectivity using CN rail network. The new service joins ZIM’s network serving the Asia-Pacific North West trade, which includes the Pacific North Express Service 1 (NP1) Pacific North Express Service 3 (NP3). The Service is due to commence on October 25th.

Liverpool-based maritime advisory firm and consultancy Focus Maritime (North West) Limited has been appointed to promote Canada's Halifax Port Authority across Europe. The move by the Nova Scotia-based authority is aimed at strengthening its presence across the continent and sees Liverpool-based Graham Fraser take on the role of director, business development and growth - Europe. Algoma Central Corporation's 'M/V Algobay' renamed  'Radcliffe R. Latimer' in a rededication ceremony in Port Colborne. The self-unloading bulk carrier, which transports commodities such as grain, coal, iron ore and gypsum to ports around the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway and Atlantic Canada will now be called the M/V Radcliffe R.
